Engagement and Service
Consistent with it's mission to engage the public, the COE serves it's many constituencies through programs, events, distance education, and partnerships. These efforts improve the quality of life in Iowa, the nation, and the world and promote economic development.

  • Constituents
    • The College of Engineering serves many constituency groups including ISU students,
      faculty, staff, and alumni; Iowa communities and residents; industry; and practicing
      engineers.
    • Engineering College Industrial Advisory Council
      Purpose: The Engineering College Industrial Advisory Council is a group of industrial, business, legislative, and professional leaders who are interested in the vitality of the College of Engineering at Iowa State University. The council helps the College of Engineering to strengthen its learning, research, and outreach programs, improve its facilities, expand its base of support, and serve its alumni. Council members actively participate in the continual assessment of college progress and the development of college/industry partnerships.
      Membership: The Engineering College Industrial Advisory Council is composed of a maximum of 40 members, with about one half residing within the state of Iowa. The members are appointed by the Iowa State University's dean of engineering with advice from the current council members and from the college academic council.
    • Engineering Cooperative Education, Internship and Summer Programs Employer Advisory Board
      The College of Engineering’s Employer Advisory Board for Engineering Experiential Education is established to provide advice and support to Engineering Career Services and the Dean’s Task Force for Cooperative Education, Engineering Internship and Engineering Summer Work Experiences in their efforts to design, develop, deliver, continuously improve the College’s experiential education academic programs.
      The composition of the board will ensure adequate representation from the private and public sectors, from large, medium and small employers, from Iowa, national and global employers; and, the composition will ensure representation of all forms of engineering experiential education and of all College of Engineering programs. The board composition may include several students currently participating in engineering experiential education programs.
    • Engineering Program Advisory Boards
      Each engineering program uses an advisory board for constituent feedback, program assessment, and general program support.

  • Capacity and Commitment
    • Engineers’ Week: A time for students, faculty, staff, alumni, and corporate partners to celebrate their commitment to engineering at Iowa State.
    • Career Expo: The College hosts the nation’s largest indoor career fair. Nearly 600 recruiters from more than 200 companies will participate in 2006.
    • FIRST LEGO League: An international program for children ages 9-14 that combines a hands-on, interactive robotics program with a sports-like atmosphere. Teams consist of up to 10 players with the focus on such things as team building, problem solving, creativity, and analytical thinking.
    • Program for Women in Science and Engineering: A program to encourage women and girls of all ethnic backgrounds to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).
    • Investigation Through the Iowa Communications Network: An Iowa Communications Network (ICN) program conducted from the Iowa State campus to 10 Iowa high schools to teach students what engineering is all about. The engineering outreach program is designed to get high school students interested in studying engineering
    • Scholars Day: About 125 students plus family members attend Scholars' Day. Their schedule includes tours and sessions on engineering topics ranging from ceramic bone implants to information warfare. Representatives from corporations discuss career opportunities.
    • Preview Day: Prospective multi-cultural students tour campus facilities, meet with advisors, and enjoy dinner with engineering faculty, staff, and students
    • ISU Leadership Workshop Series engages corporate leaders and students from the Colleges of Business, Engineering, and Liberal Arts and Sciences together for a two-day leadership retreat in the spring, and a follow-up one-day workshop in the fall.
    • Engineering Student Leadership Banquet brings together corporate sponsors and student leaders to celebrate outstanding accomplishments of students, faculty and staff.
    • Iowa State is the home of Ames Laboratory, one of two-dozen major research centers supported by the U.S. Department of Energy. Ames Lab and the College of Engineering enjoy a close collaborative relationship, sharing significant scientific staff and facilities.
    • Center for Industrial Research and Service
      Since 1963, CIRAS has been helping Iowa State University Extension and the College of Engineering carry out their land-grant university mission to improve the quality of life in Iowa by enhancing the performance of Iowa industry.
    • Center for Nondestructive evaluation
      The Center for NDE (CNDE) at Iowa State University is an interdisciplinary group of scientists, students, and support staff working in close cooperation with industry to advance the field of nondestructive evaluation.
    • Iowa State's College of Engineering is one of the largest and most prestigious programs in the nation, offering 13 undergraduate and nine graduate majors to more than 4,200 students. Currently, the College is the nation’s 12th largest in undergraduate enrollment. It ranks fifth in size of engineering schools at land-grant universities.

    • Leadership through Engineering Academic
      Diversity:
      LEAD is geared to academic success and professional development for multi-cultural students.
    • Internet Explorers: Summer program to encourage women to enter science and engineering fields. The program provides internships for high school seniors every summer. These girls design web pages on science related topics that are aimed at middle school aged girls to interest them in science and engineering.
    • Engineering Honors Workshop: Summer workshop for high school seniors to explore the meaning, role and types of engineering; hosted by ISU Engineering faculty and staff.
    • Engineering Distance Education
      The College of Engineering has extended their teaching beyond the boundary of campus classrooms since 1913 when the college began providing continuing education programs for Iowa's engineers. Iowa engineers are still being served by courses produced by Engineering Distance Education as well as engineers from across the country and in some international locations. the college has expanded to 13 undergraduate curricula and confers masters and doctoral as well as bachelors degrees.
    • Program for Women in Science and Engineering
      The College of Engineering programs work closely with the Program for Women in Science and Engineering (PWSE) to provide our female students with a supportive environment for academic success. PWSE provides programming and support for undergraduate female engineering students through their learning and living communities and for the k-12 students with through the Taking the Road Less Traveled Conferences at ISU.
    • Junior College Transfer Plans
      The College of Engineering works diligently to help junior college student make an easy transition into the college's programs. The Engineering Undergraduate Program office works with the junior colleges to develop transfer plans. Academic advisors from each program help these student to plan transfer plans for being able to transfer to ISU.

    • In 2003, The Center for Industrial Research and Service (CIRAS) provided programming to Iowans from all 99 counties including 700 graduate engineers, 1,800 engineering continuing education workshop participants, and technical assistance or education to more than 200 manufacturing companies. ISU Extension to Business and Industry annually facilitates programs that deliver an impact to Iowa companies in excess of $50 million in company sales, $10 million in savings, and $15 million in investments.
