Knowledge
The COE is the origin of many important technological achievements. We are poised to continue our leadership in research in the 21st century.
- Distinctiveness
- Birthplace of some of the 20th century’s most significant technological achievements, including the world’s first electronic digital computer, the encoding process essential to nearly all fax machines, discovery of the world’s second hardest substance, and the development of “smart materials” that make air travel safer.
- The Engineering Teaching and Research Complex is home to one of the world’s only six-sided virtual reality labs (C6), which supports the research of more than 40 faculty and over 160 undergraduate students. More than $10 million in ongoing research for industry and government agencies is underway in C6.
- The College is engaged in numerous entrepreneurial activities that are significantly impacting Iowa’s economy. More than one-third of the high-tech, start-up companies located at Iowa State’s Research Park have ties to the College of Engineering.
- Tornado Simulator
The Wind Engineering and Experimental Aerodynamics (WEEA) Program at ISU focuses on the study of fluid-structure interaction problems that include, mainly the detrimental effects of wind on civil and mechanical structures, and the environment, and a wide range of aerospace-related research.
- Bridge Engineering Center
The mission of the Bridge Engineering Center is to conduct research on bridge technologies to help bridge designers/owners, particularly the Iowa Department of Transportation Office of Bridges and Structures, design, build, and maintain long-lasting bridges.
- Center for Transportation Research and Education
The Center for Transportation Research and Education (CTRE) is the focal point for transportation at Iowa State University, a premier land-grant university. CTRE performs transportation research for public and private agencies and companies; manages its own education program for transportation students; and conducts local, regional, and national transportation services and continuing education programs.
- Geotechnical Mobil Lab. Thanks to a generous gift from Dwayne McAninch and McAninch Corporation, Iowa State has the first of its kind on-site soil engineering test facility in the United States.
- Scholarship highlights
- Research is an important facet of engineering education excellence at Iowa State University. We are delighted with the opportunities we have to partner with government and industrial units to find new knowledge and to apply technology in clever and useful ways.
- Faculty and staff of the college are principal investigators of our research projects. They are teamed with graduate and undergraduate student researchers. In addition to being affiliated with academic departments, these researchers are frequently associated with research centers of the college, the Institute for Physical Research and Technology, the Institute for Combinatorial Discovery, the Institute for Information Infrastructure, and the Plant Sciences Institute. Some of our faculty are also affiliated with the Ames Laboratory of the U.S. Department of Energy and the Center for Transportation Research and Education.
