The COE supports learning and teaching through physical spaces, programs for students, and faculty development. In the past ten years, the COE has built or renovated several buildings. These facilities have been planned with state-of-the art learning and teaching in mind. Examples of specific COE facilities designed to enhance teaching effectiveness and student learning include: [Insert examples and links to examples here].

Faculty in the COE have embraced many ISU initiatives to support teaching and learning. Almost all COE majors offer a Learning Community, small groups of students enrolled in common courses, to increase student academic and personal success. During the 2005-2006 academic year, 76.4 percent of first-year full-time students in the College of Engineering participated in a learning community. In addition, the COE offers several programs tailored to groups such as women, minorities, transfer students, and undeclared engineers. Several departments have worked closely with the ISUComm to strengthen student communication across the curriculum.

Faculty in the COE stay current in educational research and improve their teaching practice through involvement in faculty development, professional societies, and scholarship of teaching and learning. For instance, many faculty have been engaged in workshops, fellowships, and grants offered through the Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching. Numerous faculty make substantial contributions to the American Society for Engineering Education and the educational divisions of their respective professional societies. Finally, several faculty have included teaching as part of their scholarly work by testing new methods, assessing, the effectiveness of those methods, and sharing their results.
