Bioengineering Minor Program

Chemical and Biological Engineering

As the name implies, the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering is a natural fit with bioengineering. In fact, nearly half of the department’s faculty are conducting research with direct ties to bioengineering. Some of that research has practical applications in medicine and industry today, and some is laying the theoretical groundwork for future advances. Biopolymers, for example, are being developed to make vaccines and life-saving drugs more effective. Those same polymers can also be fabricated to have microscopic channels that direct nerve growth—a potential solution to blindness and paralysis. Ongoing research is also targeting the catalysts that will help make biorenewable fuels more practical and useful. In work that is more computational and theoretical, metabolic engineering and enzyme analysis are being applied to problems that will help scientists from around the world better understand those complicated processes and materials.
