Plot Building
This project was designed to determine if applying compost to new road construction sites can help to reduce erosion like that shown in the photo below. This construction site was completed late in 1999 just prior to the onset of winter and subsequent spring rains. Since it was too late in the year to establish erosion control vegetation, the embankment was vulnerable to erosion caused by snowmelt and early spring rain. This photo was taken in late May of 2000, just prior to construction of the erosion test plots. Note the deep rills in the embankment. A tractor equipped with a front end loader and row crop spaced tires was used to move the compost up the hill. The square plots are the interrill erosion test plots. The long rectangular plots are the rill erosion test plots. |
