Sample Preservation
Samples were stored in coolers after collection until they were returned to the laboratory where they were preserved in the freezer (at -4 degrees Celsius.) Data collected during sampling events was entered into the computer and observations were documented. Laboratory Procedures Erosion samples were analyzed for dissolved solids and total suspended solids to determine the amount of material (compost, topsoil, compacted subsoil) collected during a rainfall event. Samples were removed from storage in the freezer and placed in the refrigerator one week prior to analysis. The day prior to analysis, samples were placed in the laboratory to warm to room temperature. Samples were placed on the magnetic stirrer while three 20 mL replicate samples were removed and placed in preweighed, plastic centrifugal test tubes. |
