Shechtman accepts Nobel Prize
Dan Shechtman, materials science and engineering professor and Ames Lab research scientist, accepted the Nobel Prize in Chemistry on December 10, 2011. The college has posted links to interviews and photos from the event, and will add an archived video of the ceremony when it becomes available.

Alleman selected as ASCE Fellow
With 40 years of experience in environmental engineering, James Alleman has been given one of the highest recognitions a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) can receive. Alleman, a civil, construction, and environmental engineering professor, was among the five percent of distinguished ASCE members named as Fellows this fall. (Alleman release)

Student marshal and outstanding seniors named for fall commencement
Kyle Debelak, senior in materials engineering, has been named the College of Engineering student marshal for the fall 2011 commencement ceremonies scheduled for December 17. Brown discovers NAS report is based off ISU research
When Robert Brown was perusing a recent National Academies of Sciences' report on U.S. biofuels policy, his attention was drawn to the economic analysis. As he read on, Brown realized that this part of the report was heavily influenced by studies performed at Iowa State. (NAS/Brown story)
Engineering students awarded NASA grant for satellite proposal
Christopher Reis, senior in electrical engineering, and a team of undergraduate and graduate students from across the engineering college, recently won a $4,000 grant from NASA to build a nanosatellite, or a satellite with a 1kg maximum mass, called CySat. (NASA grant release)
METaL lab develops multiple ways to experience virtual reality
Iowa State's METaL virtual reality facility is designed to be a versatile, everyday research tool. It will be used to study and develop 3-D visual display technology, audio effects, and force feedback. It will also make virtual reality more accessible on campus. (METaL release)
Iowa State AGC named U.S.'s most outstanding student chapter
Completing more than 4,400 hours of community service during the 2010-11 academic year, the Iowa State University Associated General Contractors (AGC) student chapter was awarded first place in the 2011 AGC of America Outstanding Student Chapter Contest. (AGC release)
