The Engineering Student Council held the 10th annual Engineering Student Leadership Banquet on February 8 with support from corporate sponsors. Associate Dean Diane Rover provided the welcome and Thomas Hill, Iowa State vice president for student affairs, was the keynote speaker. Four students, selected for their exemplary leadership in one or more collegewide, university, community, or professional organization, received the Dean’s Student Leadership Award. The recipients are Justine Bormann (AerE), Joseph Goering (ME), Brandon Kennedy (ME), and Jessica Tobelmann (CBE). (Leadership award news link)

 

In addition, outstanding members from the engineering student clubs and organizations were recognized, along with faculty and staff members who were named as outstanding advisers. The advisers are Leslie Potter (IMSE), Freshman Leaders in Engineering; Larry Cormicle (CCEE), ISU Associated General Contractors Student Chapter; Shannon Miner (Engineering International Programs and Services), Society of International Engineers; and LeAnn Faidley (ME), Tau Beta Pi.

Three College of Engineering ECpE assistant professors have been selected to receive National Science Foundation CAREER Awards. Congratulations to Liang Dong for his project, “Programmable, Reconfigurable, and Tunable Photonic Integrated Circuit Platform through the Fusion of Photonic Crystals and Nano-Electro-Mechanical Systems,” Jaeyoun Kim for “Bio-Inspired MEMS Imaging Platform with Ultrawide, Dynamically Tunable Field-of-View for Biomedical and Assistive Applications,” and Lei Ying for “Meeting Deadlines: Theories and Algorithms to Support Delay Constrained Communication in Wireless Networks.” These highly competitive awards are for approximately $400,000 over a five-year duration. Engineering staff presented CYtation awards

Iowa State President Gregory Geoffroy presented the P&S CYtation Award to three professional and scientific (P&S) staff members from the College of Engineering at the P&S open forum on February 2. Congratulations to Dana McCullough, ECpE communications specialist, a spring 2009 honoree, as well as Travis Ballstadt, ECM media production specialist, and Deb Martin, ECpE academic adviser, who are fall 2009 honorees. The awards are given to persons nominated for performing above and beyond the call of duty and/or doing something extraordinarily well or acting in such a way as to make a very real difference in the institution.

Engineering Communications resources

The Engineering Communications (ECM) web site offers resources for your use in the production of print and online materials for the College of Engineering. A new page featuring photos of the deans and department chairs was recently added. Other resources include the ECM Style Guide, PowerPoint template, college and department nameplates, and 2050 design elements. Links to university nameplates are also on this site. If you have any questions or ideas for other resources you would like to see on this site, please call us at 294-1800.


AerE professor honored by Sigma Xi Scientific Research Society

Harry Weiss, AerE professor emeritus, has been selected to receive the Evan Ferguson Award for service by Sigma Xi, an international research society that works to promote the health of the scientific enterprise and honor scientific achievement. Weiss has been a member of the society for more than 60 years and has served as the secretary/treasurer for the Iowa State chapter since 1992 and as interim president twice. He is the second person to receive the award, which was established last year by the national Sigma Xi headquarters (Weiss Sigma Xi news link).
