Class Offerings

The classes below are taken from previous years' workshops. This is posted so that students have an idea of the topics covered at the workshop.  Although we anticipate many of the same offerings, please know that classes will change for the 2008 workshop.

Chocolate Biz – What does it take to run your own chocolate company? Use a computer program that simulates this sweet business to find out. You will order raw materials (sugar, cocoa beans, etc.), solve unexpected problems (like cockroaches), and always keep your eye on the bottom line – to produce the best chocolate you can for the least amount of money. Hosted by the Industrial & Manufacturing Systems Engineering department.
Computer Security –Take a byte out of hackers - that's what this professor does. He is known worldwide for his expertise in computer security. Learn about worms, phishing, and Trojan horses from an expert. Hosted by the Department of Electrical &Computer Engineering.
I Scream, You Scream; We All Scream for Chemical Engineering!  – Make your own delicious ice cream using all the things you can find around your own home and some basic chemistry principles! Hosted by the Chemical and Biological Engineering Department.
Aerospace Engineering – Tour our aerospace engineering facilities with faculty and see our wind tunnels, smoke tunnels, and new tornado (or Cyclone) simulator!
Mechanical Engineers - The Motion Makers – Learn what it takes to design and build an object using a software program. Hosted by our Mechanical Engineering department.
Boat Competition Boat Design & Competition – Guaranteed to be one of the most popular sessions every year!  Combine many engineering principles to build a small boat using cardboard, Styrofoam, rubber bands, balloons, etc. Your boat must support a plastic cup to which we will continue to add weight until your boat sinks. Do you have what it takes to be on the winning design team?
Hotel Lego  Constructing Campus Buildings & More – A new building is almost always being added to our campus. Tour the job site with construction engineers to see what they do behind the scenes.  After touring the site, use a computer program that has you become a bridge designer. Can you build an economical bridge that supports the weight of a semi?  Hosted by the Department of Civil & Construction, & Environmental Engineering.
Be Shocked by Elecrical Engineering

Be Shocked by Electrical Engineering Circuit boards, capacitors and transistors - oh my! Learn about the behind-the-scenes world of how electronics work.

Engineering Cool Stuff - Watch out! This professor has been known to break things or set them on fire to demonstrate the properties of materials. A sure-fire hit! Hosted by the Department of Materials Science & Engineering.

1/4 Scale Tractor - Check out one of the cool engineering clubs here on campus! If you're lucky, you'll get to take this mini-tractor on a test drive! Hosted by Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering.

Engineering – Which One? With so many engineering majors, how do you choose just one? Learn about Iowa State’s engineering majors and study abroad opportunities.

Blue Sky Creamery - Take a trip off campus for the afternoon and see how Blue Sky Creamery makes their delicious ice cream! Learn all about the engineering that goes into food processing, and enjoy a yummy sample for yourself!

Segway Experience - The Segway is a combination of many types of engineering. Learn how it was designed and where it's being used. The best part of this session - driving the Segway, of course!

Engineering Leadership Program - Look at situations that engineers in the real world deal with! Work on teamwork, creativity, and presentation skills while having fun! Hosted by the Engineering Leadership Team.

I'm Ready to Enroll! Now What?  We hope you had such a great time at the workshop that you are ready to join the Iowa State family! Learn the details of applying to Iowa State from the Office of Admissions.

Awards Ceremony No workshop is complete without an awards ceremony. Parents are encouraged to attend. You may even get to meet Cy!
