CoE roster changes
The duties of Assistant Dean Loren Zachary have been expanded and include Director of EDE. In addition three engineering faculty and staff have been appointed to new positions.University Professor James C. Hill has been named chair of the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering effective immediately. Hill, who joined the chemical engineering faculty in 1971, succeeds Charles Glatz who served as chair from 1997 to 2005. (Press Release) Steven Mickelson, associate professor and associate chair in the Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering (ABE), was appointed director of assessment for the College of Engineering effective July 1. While continuing his primary responsibilities in ABE, Mickelson will direct activities to promote and assess student learning for the entire college. (Press Release) Nancy Knight, currently manager of the College of Engineering graduate programs and graduate coordinator for the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, has been named the college’s first director of diversity and graduate student affairs. Knight’s new position is effective September 1. (Press Release)

Major research awards
The Center for Portland Cement Concrete Pavement Technology housed in the Center for Transportation Research and Education will receive $10 million over the next five years as part of the federal transportation bill signed on August 10. Tom Cackler, director of the center, is principal investigator. The funds will be used to support research projects and to leverage additional research funding from the pavement industry and state transportation departments. (Press Release)The Air Force Office of Scientific Research has awarded $2.8 million to support upgrades of the Virtual Reality Application Center (VRAC) for its use in the development of techniques for operating unmanned aerial vehicles. VRAC Director Jim Oliver is principal investigator of the two-year project. (Press Release) Vladimir Tsukruk, professor of materials science and engineering, is principal investigator of a $1.1-million NSF NIRT (nanoscale interdisciplinary research team) award for flexible nanomembranes for multifunctional microsensor arrays.

Tour the World Study & Work Abroad Fair is September 14, 5:30 to 7:00 p.m., in the Howe Hall Atrium. Sponsored by Engineering International Programs and Services, the fair will feature Iowa State faculty coordinators representing over 30 international partnerships. E-Week 2005 begins September 18. The Engineering Career Fair, which brings nearly 200 employers to Iowa State to discuss full-time, internship, co-op, and summer employment opportunities, is Tuesday, September 20, 1:00 to 8:00 p.m., at Hilton Coliseum. Plan to stop by, and encourage students to come.
