Alum headed for space

AerE alum Clayton C. Anderson, the first Iowa Stater to become an astronaut, will travel to the International Space Station (ISS) via the space shuttle Endeavor next June. He will spend two to four months aboard the ISS, where he will operate the robotic arm that is being used to construct the station. Anderson joined NASA in 1983 immediately after he completed his MS degree at Iowa State. He was selected into the astronaut training program in 1998 and has been preparing for his ISS assignment since 2003. Read more about him here.

Innovate in your mail

The second issue of Innovate, the College of Engineering research magazine, will soon be in all faculty and staff mailboxes. Be sure to take a look at some of the exciting news from the college.
Forum on differential tuition planned

An open forum to discuss the progress made on differential tuition and plans for the second phase of implementation is planned for Monday, November 6, 5:30–6:30 p.m. in 207 Marston. This is an opportunity for students and faculty to visit with the dean and other administrators about the use of these funds and the future growth of the college.

Mentoring workshop offered

A daylong workshop on Friday, November 10, at the Scheman Continuing Education Building is designed to teach engineering students, faculty, and practitioners about mentoring. The Hoover Mentoring Workshop honors the memory of James M. Hoover, a long-time civil engineering faculty member known for mentoring his students to help them realize their full potential. James K. Mitchell, University Distinguished Professor Emeritus, Virginia Tech University, will present the keynote lecture, “LESSONS FROM LEGENDS: Some Technical, Professional, and Life Teachings from the Shapers of Geotechnical Engineering.” RSVP for the workshop by November 7.

If you missed it…

On October 23, Iowa State President Gregory Geoffroy and other members of the campus community discussed the university’s current expertise in biorenewables, biorenewable fuels, and future opportunities in this rapidly growing area. Video of the town hall meeting is available here.
