Editors select Iowa State paper A paper by ECpE graduate student Scott Emrich was recently highlighted as an “Editors’ Choice” in Science magazine. The paper, “Nearly Identical Paralogs (NIPs): Implications for Maize (/Zea mays/L.) Genome Evolution,” is co-authored by Srinivas Aluru, ECpE professor, and Pat Schnable, agronomy professor, as well as faculty from several other departments. Science is an international journal published by the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Cormicle named outstanding educator Larry Cormicle, CCEE senior lecturer, has been named 2007 Outstanding Educator by the Associated General Contractors (AGC) of America. The award includes an all-expense-paid trip to the annual convention in San Antonio, Texas, in March plus a $5,000 cash award. It’s tower building time
2006 student hosts Ecoterina Mariano, Ch E, and On February 13 at 11 a.m., 15 Iowa high school teams will compete via the Iowa Communications Network (ICN) in the 10th annual Tower Building Competition. The Office of Outreach and Recruitment sponsors the contest to introduce math and science students to engineering and the career possibilities it offers. Following a welcome by Dean Mark J. Kushner, Larry Cormicle, CCEE, will give a short lesson on construction engineering and student hosts Josh Haroldson and Jessica Stroda will give instructions. The teams, each in their high school’s ICN room, will have 18 minutes to try to construct the tallest tower using only spaghetti and gumdrops. Last year’s winning tower was 236 cm tall. Spectators are welcome to come to 1324 Howe Hall to view the broadcast, which is coordinated by Engineering Distance Education. |
