Coffman faculty chair named
Bong Wie has been named the first endowed Vance D. Coffman Faculty Chair in Aerospace Engineering. Wie, who will begin his appointment in August, has been a professor of aerospace and mechanical engineering at Arizona State University since 1992. Wie’s contributions in spacecraft guidance and control, including his developmental work on the controller for the International Space Station, have earned him high regard in the aerospace community. At an awards ceremony on March 25, Iowa State recognized students who have outstanding records of academic achievement and service to the university community. Ninety-four College of Engineering students were honored. In addition, three students--Brad Bishop, IMSE; Chris Deal, ME; and Andrew Nelson, MSE--received Wallace E. Barron All-University Senior Awards, presented by the Iowa State University Alumni Association. In addition, Deal will receive the W. Robert Parks and Ellen Sorge Parks Senior Scholarship. Congratulations to all of our outstanding students. |
Deal receives WISE internship Chris Deal, ME4, is one of 11 students from across the country to be selected for the Washington Internships for Students in Engineering (WISE) program. During the ten-week program in Washington, D.C., Deal will interact with leaders in Congress, industry, and agencies to gain an in-depth look at how policy issues develop into laws and how engineers can contribute to legislative and regulatory policy decisions. (News release) Lu awarded Cheung Kong Chair Professorship The Ministry of Education of China has awarded Ping Lu, AerE professor, a Cheung Kong Chair Professorship at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. During this three-year appointment, Lu will spend several weeks at Shanghai Jiao Tong University each summer. He will work with faculty and graduate students and lead several short courses and workshops in areas such as guidance and control of spacecraft.Hoff inducted into Rural Builders Hall of Fame Steven Hoff, ABE professor, was inducted into the Rural Builders Hall of Fame at the National Frame Builders Association annual meeting in Indianapolis, Indiana. Hoff was recognized for the tremendous impact he has on the building industry through educating students and assisting builders with siting for new construction.Jacobson named TAI Educator of the Year The Technology Association of Iowa (TAI) recently named Doug Jacobson, ECpE associate professor, the Prometheus Awards’ Educator of the Year. This award recognizes the outstanding contributions Iowa individuals and information technology companies have made to the industry, community, and state. (News release)Mallapragada named “rising star” Surya Mallapragada, CBE professor, was recently named a “rising star” innovator by the Big 12 Conference. The award is granted to one scientist from each of the Big 12 universities who is leading “some of the most promising technologies under development,” according to the Big 12 Center for Economic Development, Innovation and Commercialization.
