VEISHEA celebration

Join the fun this week as Iowa State University celebrates VEISHEA and kicks off the 150th birthday celebration of the university. Purchase a special $5 VEISHEA button (available in the Memorial Union and at the food tent in front of Curtiss Hall) and enjoy a free lunch (11 a.m.-2 p.m.) at the food tent each day through Friday. The College of Engineering is host for Friday’s lunch and will serve pizza. In addition, you can play the Wheel of Innovation (created by the Engineering Student Council), win prizes, and learn more about the 30 engineering exhibits that will be in VEISHEA Village on Saturday.


Spring Innovate is out

The spring issue of Innovate, the College of Engineering research magazine, is being distributed and is also available on the Web. This issue features Iowa State engineering faculty seeking medical breakthroughs, “intelligent” solutions to America’s infrastructure crisis, and making data “real” with VE-Suite.


Biofuels research program announced

Last week, ConocoPhillips announced it will establish an eight-year, $22.5-million research program at Iowa State University dedicated to developing technologies that produce biorenewable fuels. The grant is part of ConocoPhillips’ plan to create joint research programs with major universities to produce viable solutions to diversify America’s energy sources. (News Release)

Distinguished Awards Ceremony, April 20

Iowa State University will recognize the outstanding contributions of alumni and friends at the 2007 Distinguished Awards Ceremony on Friday, April 20, at 3:15 p.m. in the Parks Library Rotunda. Three of the awardees have special connections to the College of Engineering. Caterpillar, Inc., will receive the Order of the Knoll Corporate and Foundation Award; John K. Lawson, BSME’62, will receive the Order of the Knoll Cardinal and Gold Award; and Helen Jensen Howe will receive an Honorary Alumni Award. Refreshments will be provided following the ceremony.


Undergraduates present research

Twelve engineering students presented their research as part of the first annual Undergraduate Research Symposium held on campus last week. The University Honors Program sponsored the symposium and invited all undergraduates involved in research to apply.

Presenters from the College of Engineering (and their mentors) included: Jason Boggess, ME (Wolfgang Kliemann); Kyle Byerly, CPRE (Daji Qiao); Keith Coleman, ME (Leslie Hogben); Nishanth Gaddam, ECpE (Arun Somani); Melanie Goering, ChE (Stephanie Jung); Shane Griffith, CPRE (Daji Qiao); Tyler Gustafson, CPRE (Chris Harding); Guillermo Hernandez, CPRE (Johnny Wong); Janice Marquardt, ME (Pranav Shrotriya); Sulianet Ortiz, EE (James McCalley); Christian Sax, CE (Duane Smith); and Joseph Sloan, CPRE (Srikanta Tirthapura). Reception planned for Ted Okiishi

Please join us as we honor Ted Okiishi, associate dean for research and outreach and professor of mechanical engineering, as he retires from the College of Engineering. The reception will be in the Howe Hall Atrium on Wednesday, May 2, 2-4 p.m. Ted and his wife, Rae, will be on hand to greet well-wishers. A brief program will begin at approximately 2:30 p.m.
