College welcomes new ME chair

Jonathan Wickert joined the faculty July 23 as the new chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering. He comes to Iowa State following 17 years on the faculty at Carnegie Mellon University. Wickert is the author of the textbook An Introduction to Mechanical Engineering, the inventor of two U.S. patents, and the author of over 120 papers in archival journals and at technical conferences. His research in the fields of mechanical vibration and noise control combines analytical techniques and measurement. Wickert is a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and has received many awards in recognition of his teaching and research. He earned BS, MS, and PhD degrees in mechanical engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, and he was an NSF/NATO postdoctoral fellow at the University of Cambridge, UK. For the third consecutive year, a student from the College of Engineering has participated in the Washington Internships for Students of Engineering (WISE) Program. Chris Deal, senior in mechanical engineering, was one of 11 engineering students from across the country selected to participate in the nine-week internship in the nation’s capital. As part of the program, each intern researches and writes a policy paper on a topic of personal interest. For his paper, Deal focused on global climate change policy pertaining to the advance of sustainable development through the transfer of clean energy technologies. The papers are published on-line in the WISE Journal of Engineering and Public Policy. In addition, Deal says he will likely present his paper at conferences associated with his sponsor, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, during this next year.

Previous Iowa State WISE interns were Sarah Walter, BSME’07, in 2005 and Sasha Kemmet, BSEE’07. Walter is now an engineer at Rolls Royce in Indianapolis, Indiana, and Kemmet is a graduate student at Iowa State. (News article)

Engineers share in economic development grants

Engineering faculty are members of research teams on six projects funded from the Grow Iowa Values Fund. These economic development dollars are designated for supporting the research and development of new technologies that could create or boost Iowa businesses. Ten grants were awarded for fiscal year 2008 totaling $1,000,050. (News release)

The engineering faculty and their projects are: Balaji Narasimhan, CBE (project led by Michael Wannemuehler, veterinary microbiology and preventive medicine), develop a protective vaccine against pneumonic plague, $100,444; Charles Hurburgh and Jacek Koziel, ABE (project led by Jay-Lin Jane, food science and human nutrition), develop a technique for converting uncooked dry-grind corn into ethanol, $149,233; Eliot Winer, ME, and Jim Oliver, VRAC, commercialize a software package that uses 3-D visualization to help doctors model, manipulate, and manage data, $109,533; Arun Somani and Suraj Kothari, ECpE, develop a tool to improve efficiency of software testing, $95,001; Halil Ceylan and Kasthurirangan Gopalakrishnan, CCEE, work to replace chemicals used to stabilize soils beneath road projects with lignin, a co-product of ethanol produced from plant fiber, $93,775; and Terrence Meyer, ME, study how laser-based sensors can analyze combustion systems that burn alternative fuels with the goal of improving combustion efficiency, $86,814.

Alum takes first spacewalk

Aerospace engineering alum Clay Anderson took his first spacewalk last week. Anderson, who is flight engineer serving on the International Space Station, spent seven hours and forty-one minutes outside the station. In his in-flight journal, Anderson, who has been in space since June 8, describes what it is like to be 220 nautical miles above Earth. “It is a place that is absolutely free of borders; a place where its beauty is for lack of a better word … overwhelming. I have been amazed at the differences you can see from orbit, simply by the change in the sun’s angle, the time of day, or the direction from which I look.” To learn more about his experiences, see his in-flight journal.

Mark your calendars—August 22

Plan now to attend the College of Engineering Fall Convocation on Wednesday, August 22, at 3:10 p.m. in Howe Hall, Alliant Energy-Lee Liu Auditorium. The theme is Iowa State’s sesquicentennial, which will be celebrated throughout this academic year. The program includes new faculty and staff introductions, a welcome to our two new chairs, and recognition of promotion and tenure candidates, endowed faculty positions, and recipients of the 2007 college awards. Dean Mark J. Kushner will give the State of the College Address. A reception will follow the program.

Interns present posters August 3

SPIRE-EIT interns attend session on virtual assembly.

The 15 interns participating in the Summer Program for Interdisciplinary Research and Education-Emerging Interface Technologies (SPIRE-EIT) at VRAC will present posters and technical demonstrations on Friday, August 3. The program is from 10 a.m. to noon in the Molecular Biology Building atrium and is open to the public.

The presentations will focus on five projects—Magic Box, an inverse cave that allows the user a new means of interacting with computers and virtual space; Laser Target, a prototype of an electronic archery scoring system; Direct Interface to Digital Communities, interface technologies and immersive virtual reality (VR) that enable direct interaction with a digital community; Battlespace, a game-playing environment added to the Virtual Battlespace environment; and Biology in VR, development of an interface for exploring cellular metabolism in VR.

SPIRE-EIT is funded by NSF with support from the Colleges of Engineering and Liberal Arts and Sciences, the Graduate College, and Programs for Women in Science and Engineering. The interns came from universities across the country to learn about graduate school and research and to explore interface technologies.
