Homecoming breakfast and tailgate planned
Faculty, staff, and students are invited to join the college in honoring the 2007 Iowa State University Alumni Association engineering award recipients on Friday, October 19. A buffet breakfast will be served at 8:30 a.m. in the Howe Hall atrium.

AerE research team develops sensor to detect leaks
In a NASA-sponsored project, AerE professor Dale Chimenti and his research team have developed a low-cost sensor that can help astronauts detect leaks on spacecraft. The team includes Stephen Holland, AerE assistant professor; Ronald Roberts, CNDE scientist; Ricky Reusser, BSAerE’07; and Steven Sulhoff, AerE4. (News release)

Rajan named new ICD director
Krishna Rajan, a Stanley Chair of Interdisciplinary Engineering and a professor of materials science and engineering, has been named the new director of Iowa State’s Institute for Combinatorial Discovery (ICD). Established in 2003, the ICD focuses on the development and application of parallel computing techniques for the rapid discovery of new materials. Rajan succeeds Balaji Narasimhan, who was recently appointed associate dean for research and economic development in the college. (News release)
Workshop to examine unintentional bias
Faculty, staff, and students are invited to an ISU ADVANCE workshop, “Practical Tools for Recognizing and Reducing Unintentional Bias,” on Wednesday, October 31, from 9 a.m. to noon in the Memorial Union Sun Room. The workshop will include a keynote presentation by Dr. Erin Kelly, Department of Sociology, University of Minnesota; a Reader’s Theatre Production featuring Iowa State faculty; and conversation with colleagues about best practices to minimize unintentional bias in everyday activities. Engineering-sponsored lunch is October 19
The College of Engineering is sponsoring lunch on central campus on Friday, October 19. The event is part of the weeklong Homecoming 2007 celebration. Those who purchase a $4 homecoming button will receive a free lunch on campus MondayFriday. Buttons may be purchased at the homecoming booth in the Memorial Union through Wednesday and at the lunch tent on central campus. Anderson helps welcome new ISS team
The arrival of the Expedition 16 crew at the International Space Station (ISS) last week means AerE alum Clay Anderson will soon bid his Expedition 15 crewmates farewell. Commander Fyodor Yurchikhin and flight engineer Oleg Kotov will return to Earth on October 21 onboard the Soyuz. Iowa native Peggy Whitson is commander of Expedition 16. Anderson will return to Earth onboard the space shuttle Discovery in early November.
