Holiday open house is December 7
Join College of Engineering faculty, staff, and friends at the annual holiday open house on Friday, December 7, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., 308 Marston Hall. This special event is hosted by Dean Mark J. Kushner and the engineering administrative staff.
Reception to honor Jan Putnam
Jan Putnam, classification officer for undergraduate programs, is retiring from the College of Engineering after 37 years of service. A reception is planned for 35 p.m. on Tuesday, December 4, in the Campanile Room, Memorial Union. A program will begin at 3:30 p.m.
USDA teaching award presented to Kaleita
Amy Kaleita, ABE, has been awarded the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food and Agricultural Sciences Excellence in Teaching Award. The award was presented November 11 in New York City at the National Awards Program for Excellence in College and University Teaching in the Food and Agricultural Sciences. (News release)
Wickert receives medallion for named professorship

Iowa State University President Gregory Geoffroy recognized Jonathan Wickert, chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, as the first Larry and Pam Pithan Professor of Mechanical Engineering at a medallion ceremony on November 8. Larry Pithan, a 1973 ME alum, and his wife, Pam, established the professorship last June. “I really appreciate the education I received at Iowa State and believe it has played a significant part in the success of my career,” says Larry Pithan, senior vice president, KJWW Engineering Consultants in Rock Island, Illinois. The Pithans established the professorship to show support for Iowa State and to help the university recruit and retain the highest quality faculty and students.
Garmin establishes scholarships for ECpE undergrads
Garmin International has announced that Iowa State University is one of eight universities at which the Kao Family Foundation will establish scholarships for ECpE undergraduates. Eight $5,000 scholarships will be awarded each year. Garmin International is part of a group of companies that designs, manufactures, markets, and sells navigation, communication, and information devices and applications. (News release)

Proposals for research funds will continue to be edited by Engineering Communications and Marketing as long as materials are received five working days prior to the submission deadline. To take advantage of this service, simply send your proposal as an e-mail attachment to Pam Reinig at preinig@iastate.edu. Please include your deadline.
Commencement activities planned
The Master’s/PhD pre-commencement reception will be Friday, December 14, 5:307 p.m., 220240 Scheman Building. The Iowa State Graduate College commencement ceremony is at 8 p.m. in C. Y. Stephens. For details and to register, go to Master’s/PhD Pre-Commencement Reception.

LEGO championship coming January 19
Mark your calendarsthe annual Iowa First LEGO League Championship will be Saturday, January 19, 2008. Hundreds of 9- to 14-year-old middle school students representing 70 teams from throughout Iowa will converge on Howe, Hoover, and Black Engineering to participate. Based on the theme “Power Puzzle,” teams will build and program LEGO robots to complete missions focused on energy management and conservation.
This is the seventh year Iowa State has hosted the tournament. When registration opened in October, the tournament roster filled to capacity in a record 4.5 hours, says Camille Sloan Schroeder, tournament director and coordinator of Iowa State Engineering Kids, a College of Engineering program promoting science, technology, and engineering to students.
Faculty, staff, and students are invited to attend the day-long event, which also includes many science and engineering activities. Volunteers are still needed. ECpE alums earn national recognition
Robert K. Brayton, BSEE’56 and 2002 Marston Medalist, received the Phil Kaufman Award for Distinguished Contributions to Electronic Design Automation at the November 1 awards banquet in Santa Clara, California. Brayton was recognized as an industry pioneer and one of the world’s authorities on logic synthesis and format verification. (News article)
Donald Linder, BSEE’65, was recently honored with GlobalSpec’s Great Moments in Engineering Award. The award recognizes Linder and his team at Motorola for developing the world’s first mobile phone in 1973. GlobalSpec is an online search service and publishing company for engineers. (News article)
