Astronaut to be guest on Talk of Iowa
December 12

Aerospace engineering alum and astronaut Clay Anderson will be the guest of Iowa State President Gregory Geoffroy during the Talk of Iowa call-in show on WOI-AM (640) radio from 11 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, December 12. The show will be broadcast statewide on the Iowa Public Radio network. Anderson, who earned his MS degree at Iowa State in 1983, returned from a five-month assignment onboard the International Space Station in November. (News article)


Iowa State-ConocoPhillips project to receive
$2-million DOE grant


The U.S. Department of Energy has selected an Iowa State University-ConocoPhillips alternative fuel project for an award of up to $2 million. The award will result in the design and construction of a biomass gasifier and gas cleanup system at Iowa State. The system will be used to analyze and improve a process for converting biomass into synthetic diesel fuel. Robert C. Brown, Iowa Farm Bureau director of the Bioeconomy Institute, will lead Iowa State's work on the research project. (News release)


ME’s Meyer develops laser technologies to analyze combustion, biofuels

ME Assistant Professor Terry Meyer is using laser technology to develop advanced sensors capable of analyzing the combustion inside engines, power generators, and heating systems. Meyer will use the sensors to study the combustion of alternative fuels. (News release)



ME senior is commencement student marshal

Samantha Hanson, a senior in mechanical engineering, will serve as the College of Engineering student marshal at Iowa State's undergraduate commencement ceremony on Saturday, December 15. She was selected from nominees submitted by the departments to the dean's office. Each of Iowa State's colleges selects a student marshal to lead the graduating classes in to the ceremony. Hanson has chosen Gloria Starns, ME lecturer, as her faculty escort.

Hanson interned three summers at John Deere, spent a semester at the University of Extremadura in Spain, and has been involved in a variety of university and college activities. Her leadership roles have included resource management co-chair for the Engineers Week central committee, co-chair for Senior Visitation, and operations chair for Dance Marathon.


Commencement activities planned

The College of Engineering Master's/PhD pre-commencement reception will be Friday, December 14, 5:30–7 p.m., 220–240 Scheman Building. The Iowa State Graduate College commencement ceremony is at 8 p.m. in C. Y. Stephens. For details about the reception, visit the Master’s/PhD Pre-Commencement Reception web page.

Each department will host a reception to honor undergraduates on Saturday, December 15, 9–10:30 a.m. Sites vary by departments.
