70 teams to compete in LEGO championships
On Saturday, January 19, 70 teams of 9- to 14-year-old students will converge on Howe and Hoover Halls to participate in the annual FIRST LEGO League Iowa Championship. The teams, each with as many as 10 members, will build LEGO robots capable of moving tabletop models that simulate various energy-related tasks, such as: harvesting and processing corn, setting up wind turbines, raising a solar panel to the roof of a house, connecting communities to a power plant, deploying the solar panels of a power satellite, and replacing a pickup with a hydrogen car. More than 275 faculty, staff, and student volunteers will help to make this daylong event a success. The contest begins at 9 a.m. and is free and open to the public. (News release)

Hoovers establish endowed chair in ME
Iowa State University announced in December that Gary and Donna Hoover of Scottsdale, Arizona, have pledged more than $1.5 million to create the first endowed chair in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. In addition to the $1.5-million commitment required to create this faculty position, the Hoovers are funding the chair on an annual basis until the endowment is fully funded. This gifting method enables the college to fill the position more quickly. (News release)
VISIONS magazine, which arrived in your mailboxes earlier this month, features another endowed chair in the College of Engineering. You can read about Bong Wie, the Vance D. Coffman Endowed Chair in Aerospace Engineering, on page 14 of the winter 2008 issue. In addition, a number of other engineering students, faculty, and alumni are in the magazine that features Iowa State’s largest fundraising campaign ever.

The College of Engineering Spring Career Fair is Tuesday, February 19, in Hilton Coliseum and the Scheman Building from noon to 6 p.m. This is a great opportunity for students to look for summer, intern, co-op, or full-time positions. Student ambassadors will visit selected classes in February to talk about the fair and especially to encourage freshmen and sophomores to attend the fair so they can begin building relationships with prospective employers. If you can plan flexibility with class schedules on February 19, it would be appreciated. In addition, the busiest interview day for engineering students is the day after the fair, Wednesday, February 20.
Many of the employer representatives at the fair are alums who are interested in visiting with faculty and staff. Plan now to attend the fair and/or a social hour after the fair from 6:15 to 7:15 p.m. If you have questions, contact Engineering Career Services at ecs@iastate.edu or 294-3553 or visit the Spring Career Fair Web site.
