‘Cluster champions’ to help college meet 2050 Challenge

From the CyberInnovation Institute to the Bioeconomy Institute, the college is rising to the “2050 Challenge” to meet critical national and global needs that transcend traditional disciplinary boundaries and ways of thinking.

The college is currently in the second year of a five-year program to fill as many as 30 new faculty lines in five cross-disciplinary clusters. To assist in the growth and development of the clusters, the college has appointed 10 “cluster champions.” The five clusters and the champions are: Biosciences--Julie Dickerson and Jacqueline Shanks; Energy--Rob Anex and Mark Bryden; Engineering for Extreme Events--Z. J. Wang and Terry Wipf; Information and Decision Sciences--Srinivas Aluru and Jim Oliver; and Sustainability--Richard LeSar and Sarah Ryan. The champions’ responsibilities include such activities as promoting the clusters internally and externally, identifying and grooming candidates, facilitating communications between cluster faculty and prospective hires, and supervising seminars and monthly meetings for faculty that comprise each of the clusters. To learn more, please see the Web feature, “College faculty ‘champion’ hires across disciplinary boundaries to enhance teaching, research.”

USA Today names engineering senior to All-USA Academic Second Team

Chris Deal, a senior in mechanical engineering, has been named to the All-USA Academic Second Team by USA Today. In his entry essay, Deal wrote about his experiences as co-executive director of Iowa State’s 2007 Dance Marathon. Deal, who will graduate in May, has also been named a 2008 Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar, receiving a full scholarship for a year of graduate study at Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda. At Makerere, he will build on his previous internship experience at the Duane Arnold Energy Center, Palo, and Iowa State’s Center for Sustainable Environmental Technologies. (News release)

Students build spaghetti and gumdrop towers

Burlington High School team members work on their tower, which came in second at 182 cm.

Ten Iowa high school teams competed in the 11th Annual Tower Building Competition over the Iowa Communications Network last week. The event, which is coordinated by Engineering Enrollment Services and Precollegiate Programs, is directed from Engineering Distance Education. Two student hosts--Eco Mariano, ChE4, and Greg McGrath, ME4, moderated the event. Larry Cormicle, CCEE; Diane Rover, associate dean; and a number of student groups--the Society of Women Engineers, Associate General Contractors, American Society of Civil Engineers, and Engineering Ambassador and Mentoring Program--also participated. The Lynnville-Sully team took first place with their tower measuring 322 cm. After the competition, the classes discussed the engineering principles that affected the success of their construction. For more information, please see Tower Building.

College hosted scholars

About 170 students and their families visited the college last weekend. On Friday, February 22, 26 multicultural students participated in an “Evening with Engineering.” The purpose was to give the students, who came from across the United States and Puerto Rico, an opportunity to experience campus life and learn more about the diversified curricula in the college. On Saturday, these students joined 140 other students for Scholars’ Day. After a welcome from Dean Mark J. Kushner, the students, who have all been awarded university or college scholarships for next fall, and their families spent the day exploring engineering topics and careers through workshops and tours. These events were coordinated by Engineering Enrollment Services and Precollegiate Programs. For more information, please see Scholars’ Day and Evening with Engineering.
