Solar decathlon exhibit this week

Faculty, staff, and students are invited to an exhibit featuring preliminary designs of the solar house the Iowa State Solar Decathlon Team is building for a U.S. Department of Energy competition. The exhibit will be open all this week in the College of Design atrium. The team welcomes your comments and ideas. Engineering faculty, staff, and students are key members of this campuswide team. ADVANCE networking event is March 13

Faculty are invited to an Iowa State ADVANCE networking event, “Gender, Science and the Myths of Merit,” on Thursday, March 13, from noon to 1 p.m. in the South Ballroom, Memorial Union. Marlene Zuk, associate vice provost for faculty equity and diversity and professor of biology at the University of California, Riverside, will give the presentation. Please bring your own lunch. Kothari wins two Prometheus Awards

The Technology Association of Iowa recently presented ECpE Professor Suraj Kothari two Prometheus Awards--one for Innovation in Teaching and one for Innovator of the Year. Kothari was nominated in recognition of his recent personal accomplishments in teaching as well as the successful development of his start-up software engineering company, EnSoft Corp. The Prometheus Awards recognize outstanding contributions Iowa individuals and information technology companies have made to the industry, community, and state. (News Release)


Goodwin receives CYtation Award

Mary Goodwin, advising coordinator, Engineering Advising and Student Services, was one of eight Iowa State professional and scientific staff members who recently received CYtation awards. Given semi-annually by the Professional and Scientific Council, the awards recognize P&S staff who have demonstrated their commitment to excellence. Goodwin, who is a member of the University Academic Advising Committee (UAAC), was nominated by UAAC in recognition of her dedication to students and to academic advising. (CYtation winners)


Career Fair draws 2,200 students
More than 1,000 recruiters and 2,200 students participated
in the Career Fair.

At the spring Career Fair held last month, 282 employers sent more than 1,000 recruiters to talk with students about permanent employment as well as co-ops and internships. Some 2,200 students participated in the Career Fair, and more than 600 had personal interviews the day after the fair. Thanks to everyone who encouraged students to attend and who stopped by to visit with recruiters.


Astronaut Anderson to give Distinguished Lecture

AerE alum and astronaut Clayton Anderson will present a talk, “Dreams to Reality,” at 3:10 p.m., April 10, in Alliant Energy-Lee Liu Auditorium in Howe Hall as part of the Department of Aerospace Engineering’s Distinguished Lecture Series. Anderson will share experiences from his 152 days in space ranging from the launch of space shuttle Atlantis in June to his role on the International Space Station and three spacewalks to the successful completion of his mission on November 7. After his presentation, Anderson will be inducted into the department’s Hall of Distinguished Alumni. A reception will follow.


Students present research at the capitol

Four aerospace engineering undergraduates participated in the 3rd annual Research in the Capitol event on Monday, March 10. Each year the Regent universities (Iowa State, University of Iowa, and University of Northern Iowa) send 20 students to the capitol building in Des Moines to display their research posters and talk with legislators, reporters, and top university administrators about their projects. The AerE presenters and their topics were Brian Kaplinger, “Asteroid Deflection Research Initiative (ADRI): A Comparison of Low, Medium, and High Energy Methods”; Matt Martin, “Imaging Airflow Over an Airfoil Near Stall”; and Sam Wagner and Nathan Willis, “Iowa State Student Moon Orbiter.” Further information is available at the University Honors Program Web site.


Marston Club and Patent Dinner is April 10

Make your reservations now for the Marston Club and Patent Dinner, which will be April 10 at the CyberInnovation Institute, Iowa State Research Park. The cost is $35. This year’s event will showcase the CyberInnovation Institute (CII), a unique collaboration of five IT-related research centers. Learn more about the institute’s exciting potential and vision from Dean Mark J. Kushner and James Oliver, CII director.

In addition, aerospace engineering alumnus, astronaut, and Distinguished Alumni Award winner Clayton Anderson will serve as the keynote speaker. All 2007 faculty patent recipients, the Professional Progress in Engineering Awardees, and our Distinguished Alumni Award winners--Anderson, Arend “Sandy” Sandbulte, Donna Hoover, and 3M--will also be recognized.

Two Iowa State engineering seniors honored

Korin Reid, ChE, and Beth Takemoto, IMSE, are among the four students from Iowa’s three Regent universities selected to receive the 2008 Alliant Energy Erroll B. Davis Jr. Award recognizing engineering or business students from underrepresented groups. The award was created by Alliant to honor Davis, who served as chairman of the board of Alliant Energy Corporation from 2000 to 2006. The award, made possible through a gift of $400,000 from the Alliant Energy Foundation, recognizes the recipients’ academic achievement, leadership in campus and community organizations, and potential for future career success. Each honoree receives a cash prize after his or her graduation. (News release)


CCEE team earns spot in national competition
The steel bridge team builds its bridge at the regional competition.

The Iowa State American Society of Civil Engineers’ Steel Bridge Team won second place in the recent Midwest regional steel bridge contest held in Iowa City, earning a spot in the national competition in May at the University of Florida. This is the first time since 2002 that the Iowa State team has gone to the national competition. (News release)

Another CCEE team--the residential construction team from Iowa State’s Associated General Contractors of America student chapter--competed last month in the residential construction competition at the National Association of Home Builder’s International Show in Orlando. The team placed 10th out of 30 teams and was named the “Rookie of the Year.” (News release)
