ECpE celebrates 100 years

ECpE will begin a year-long celebration marking 100 years of education and research excellence in conjunction with VEISHEA activities on Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m. in Coover Hall. Cake and refreshments will be served, and a brief ceremony is planned for 1:30 p.m. Visitors can tour the new Coover Hall addition. Students and faculty have planned a variety of exhibits and demonstrations showcasing the latest in technology. Demonstrations will include wirelessly lighting a light bulb, creating lightning, flying a UAV helicopter, and operating a new robot that moves like a human hand. ECpE displays will be at the engineering tent in front of Marston and in Coover Hall.

ADVANCE Program issues call for proposals

The ISU ADVANCE Program has allocated $5,000 to support departments and centers in bringing in speakers for lectures, seminars, and colloquia during the 2008-2009 academic year.

Proposals are being accepted for two $1,000 lectureships to bring outstanding speakers in the STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) fields to campus. The deadline is April 15. (Call for proposals 134 KB .pdf file)

Ten $300 awards are available to assist departments in bringing speakers to campus in any discipline. Applications will be accepted and reviewed
continuously throughout the year. (Call for proposals 134 KB .pdf file)

Guidelines are available on the ADVANCE Web site.

Join in the VEISHEA activities

Iowa State’s 86th VEISHEA celebration began last week and will run through April 13. With the purchase of a VEISHEA button for $5, you can have lunch just west of Curtiss Hall, Monday-Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., or until the food runs out. The buttons will be available for purchase at the lunch tent. The College of Engineering is the host for Wednesday’s lunch. The menu includes hamburgers, chips, and lemonade. Many of the engineering student organizations will have displays to showcase their activities near the lunch tent. Be sure to stop by to visit with our students!

On Saturday, April 12, there will be plenty to do and see before and after the parade, so plan to spend the day enjoying the sights and sounds of VEISHEA. Two large tents will be in front of Marston Hall featuring engineering displays, demonstrations, and activities for all ages. In addition, NASA will have a special exhibit complete with spacecraft models, giveaways, video reels rolling on a TV monitor, and an intern in a 7’ inflatable astronaut suit. Clayton Anderson is scheduled to stop by after his VEISHEA parade duties.

Other displays include a balloon launch, flying blimp, and robotics demonstrations in Howe Hall; formula car trial runs out at the Towers; Gaffers’ Guild glass-blowing demonstrations in Sweeney Hall; and Tau Beta Pi catapult competition on central campus.
