Hongwei Xin named ASABE fellow

The American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) inducted Hongwei Xin, professor, agricultural and biosystems engineering, as one of 12 new ASABE fellows at the 2008 international meeting in Rhode Island. To be considered for this recognition, an individual must demonstrate unusual professional distinction and have outstanding qualifications and experience in the field of agricultural engineering. Only about two percent of ASABE members have achieved the grade of fellow.

Technology, Globalization, and Culture course goes public

With an impressive list of speakers onboard to give lectures for ME 484/ME/WLC 584, Technology, Globalization, and Culture, instructors James Bernard, Anson Marston Distinguished Professor in Engineering, and Mark Rectanus, professor of German and chair of world languages and cultures, are inviting the public to participate. The course, they say, is for anybody who wants to learn more about globalization and related issues, and opening the course to the public is an effort to build a community around the ideas generated by course speakers, discussions, and books. Class sessions are generally 6-7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays in Alliant Energy-Lee Liu Auditorium, and live streaming is also available. For more information about the course, including a schedule of speakers, visit the Technology, Globalization, and Culture Web site.

ADVANCE program features resources for faculty searches

The first ADVANCE networking event for 2008-2009 is planned for Wednesday, September 10, from noon to 1 p.m. in the Memorial Union Gallery. The discussion will focus on faculty recruitment with special emphasis on recruiting diverse faculty. Bonnie Glatz, ADVANCE administrative fellow for spring 2008, will present her observations and recommendations about the resources she has gathered. The resources are available on the ADVANCE Resources and Reports Web page. Participants are invited to bring their lunches. Refreshments will be provided.

The ISU ADVANCE Program is supported by the National Science Foundation through an ADVANCE Institutional Transformation Award.

Faculty flexibility is topic of national conference

The ISU ADVANCE Program and the Office of Women in Higher Education of the American Council on Education, Center for Effective Leadership, invite faculty, staff, and students to a national conference in Ames on October 10-11. The conference, “The New Norm of Faculty Flexibility: Transforming the Culture in Science & Engineering,” will be held in the Scheman Continuing Education Building.

Keynote speakers are Shirley Malcom, head of the Directorate for Education and Human Resources Programs of the American Association for the Advancement of Science; Mary Ann Mason, Graduate Division dean (2000-2007), University of California, Berkley; and Joan C. Williams, Distinguished Professor, University of California Hastings College of the Law, and author of Unbending Gender: Why Family and Work Conflict and What To Do About It. Topics include policies and practices for faculty flexibility; intersections and collaborations among business, industry, and academe; and measurement and assessment of policies and flexibility.

A complete conference description is available on the ADVANCE Web site. Iowa State faculty, staff, and students may register for a reduced rate of $75 until September 15. Late registration is $100.
