Nuclear engineering minor established
To help meet the increasing demand for engineers trained in nuclear energy, the College of Engineering has established a nuclear engineering minor. The goal is to offer students from a broad spectrum of engineering disciplines the opportunity to gain an understanding of nuclear science and how it affects the world. Greg Maxwell, ME associate professor, is coordinator of the minor. Engineering undergraduates can sign up for the minor now and begin taking classes in the spring. Through the Big 12 Engineering Consortium, an organization created to increase the accessibility of engineering courses in high-demand areas, several of the minor’s courses are taught online from schools such as Kansas State University, Texas A&M University, and the University of Texas. Bioengineering minor coursework to begin in spring
The College of Engineering will offer the first course of a new bioengineering minor in the spring. The minor, which is open to all undergraduate engineering majors, is an interdisciplinary program designed to provide students with more career options as engineers increasingly seek to solve biological problems. Specializations in bioinformatics and systems biology, biomaterials, biomechanics, biomicro systems, biobased products, and bioprocessing are offered. Peter Reilly, Anson Marston Distinguished Professor in Engineering and professor of chemical and biological engineering, is program director. He chairs the Bioengineering Minor Supervisory Committee, provides leadership for curriculum development, and oversees implementation of the program. Maneesha Aluru, an associate scientist in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, is program coordinator. (News release)
ECpE centennial history book available
The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering has published a 112-page centennial history book. The book includes pictures and information dating back to 1909. Copies are available in 2215 Coover with a minimum donation of $30 payable to the Iowa State University Foundation. (More information and printable order form)
Fall Fun Festival is October 26
The Iowa State University student chapter of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) will hold its annual Fall Fun Festival on Sunday, October 26, 2-4 p.m. on the second floor of Pearson Hall. Twelve student engineering clubs will help host this event featuring games and activities that are appropriate for children through fifth grade. Admission is free, but please bring a canned food item for SWE’s fall food drive. For more information, call 4-0678.
The Time is Now!
Iowa State University is working toward a $287,000 goal for the 2008 United Way of Story County campaign. Thanks to all of you who have given to this campaign. If you haven’t yet submitted your pledge, the deadline is Friday, October 17. Please consider that each of us is capable of making a difference in the life of a neighbor, friend, or resident in need in Story County. Visit the ISU United Way Web site to learn more about how it impacts our community and to view progress toward our United Way goal.
