Engineering professor and student receive Iowa Women of Innovation awards

Professor Jacqueline Shanks, CBE, and PhD candidate Julie Rursch, ECpE, were among nine women who received Women of Innovation awards at the Technology Association of Iowa (TAI) awards presentation on November 12. TAI started the event this year to elevate and celebrate women leaders in science, technology, and engineering.

Shanks received the Research Innovation and Leadership award in recognition of the significant impact she has made through her research in plant metabolic engineering. Rursch, who is assistant director of the IT-Adventures project, received the Collegian Innovation and Leadership award for the work she has done in creating and implementing the IT-Adventures project. In addition, Andrea Spencer, director of the State Science and Technology Fair, received the Academic Innovation and Leadership (Secondary) award, for her work in promoting the growth of the fair. More than 70 nominations for the awards were submitted from communities across the state. Diane Rover, ECpE professor and associate dean for academic and student affairs, was a finalist for the Academic Innovation and Leadership (Post-Secondary) award. (News release)

Coming soon in Innovate

Innovate cover

Don’t be fooled by the temporary drop in the price of gas: the long-term forecast is for relentlessly upward pressure on fossil fuels. This fall’s Innovate examines the work of Iowa State engineers to answer that challenge, both through the Engineering Thematic Year’s focus on energy and through new research initiatives in solar technologies, industrial chemicals from biorenewable feedstocks, and improvements to the venerable internal combustion engine. So leave the car in the garage for a few hours and make a date with America’s energy future this fall in Innovate.

ADVANCE events planned

The Iowa State ADVANCE program has planned several lunchtime discussions during the first week of December. On Tuesday, December 2, ADVANCE professors Kristen Constant, MSE, and Shauna Hallmark, CCEE, as well as Chuck Glatz, ADVANCE equity adviser to the College of Engineering, will host the discussion in 114 Marston from noon to 1 p.m. The purpose is to facilitate networking, provide a brief update about ADVANCE activities, and listen to any praise or concerns you might have about ADVANCE and the college climate for your success. Bring your own lunch, and the college will provide beverages and dessert.

A workshop on faculty search resources is planned for Wednesday, December 3, from noon to 1 p.m. in Room 3512 of the Memorial Union. Topics that will be demonstrated and discussed include best practices for candidate evaluation, best practices during interviews, and avoiding cognitive errors when evaluating and reading letters of recommendation. While this information will be useful to all who evaluate applicants and promotion and tenure candidates, it will be of particular use to current members of search committees who will be able to focus on elements pertinent to particular stages of the search process. Bring your lunch, and dessert and beverages will be provided. Please RSVP to Nicol Jones, advance@iastate.edu or 294-6151. (ADVANCE upcoming events)

Seventeen Iowa State engineering undergraduate and graduate students joined 5,800 students and professionals from across the country at the National Society of Women Engineers (SWE) meeting November 6–8 in Baltimore. Nancy Knight, director of Graduate Enrollment Management, serves as a SWE co-adviser with Johna Wolfe, academic adviser in mechanical engineering. Knight reports that the National SWE meeting is the favorite graduate recruiting event that she attends each year. “It’s an affirming meeting for women engineers with great attendance by corporate partners, students, and professionals,” she says.

In addition to attending professional development seminars, interviewing for internships and research opportunities at the career fair, and participating in various competitions, the students took turns helping Knight talk with prospective students in the graduate recruiting booth. The booth was also visited by dozens of alumni, who were attending the conference as professionals or corporate recruiters. Additionally, Knight was able to provide information to recruiters about the college’s Career Management Service.

The Iowa State SWE Chapter received the Outstanding Collegiate Section Award, Silver Level, at the conference. “Winning awards such as this is a great honor and also provides a great incentive for the ISU SWE members to keep developing the awesome ISU section,” says Allison Machtemes, SWE president. “It really shows them that all the hard work with their events and position duties pays off to make a great section.”
