Holiday open house is December 12

Join College of Engineering faculty, staff, and friends at the annual holiday open house on Friday, December 12, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in the Marston Hall third floor hallway. This special event is hosted by Interim Dean James Bernard, Associate Deans Balaji Narasimhan and Diane Rover, and Assistant Deans Loren Zachary and Derrick Rollins.


Iowa State Wind Energy Symposium held

The College of Engineering hosted the first “Iowa State Wind Energy Symposium: Challenges and Opportunities” on December 9. Some 220 people registered for the symposium, which focused on drawing a road map to better define Iowa State’s role in this rapidly evolving energy sector. (News release)


Civil engineering senior selected to be student marshal

Jennifer Ruddy

The College of Engineering has named Jennifer Ruddy, a senior in civil engineering, to be the student marshal who will lead the engineering graduating class into Iowa State’s undergraduate commencement ceremony on Saturday, December 20. She was selected for this honor from nominees submitted by the departments. Ruddy has chosen CCEE Professor Say Kee Ong as her faculty escort.

Ruddy, who is earning her BS in civil engineering with an emphasis in environmental engineering, has a minor in business. She is in the concurrent degree program and will continue her academic work in environmental engineering with plans to complete her MS degree in December 2009. Originally from Ankeny, Iowa, Ruddy became interested in research her first year through a Freshman Honors Program research assistantship and has continued to gain a variety of research experiences throughout her undergraduate career. In addition, she has been a mentor and role model for other students through her active participation in such organizations as Women in Science and Engineering, the Iowa State Chi Epsilon chapter, and the Freshman Honors Program. Ruddy has interned the last two summers with Fox Engineering in Ames and will join the firm in a permanent position after completing her MS degree.

FIRST LEGO League Championship coming January 17

The annual Iowa FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Championship will be Saturday, January 17, 2009. Hundreds of 9- to 14-year-old middle school students representing teams from throughout Iowa will converge on the Iowa State campus to participate. This is the eighth year the College of Engineering has hosted the championship. Based on the theme “Climate Connections,” teams will build and program LEGO robots to complete missions that delve into questions surrounding our current and future climatic conditions. Alumna named Iowa DNR deputy director

Pat Boddy

Pat Boddy, who holds MS and BS degrees in agricultural engineering from Iowa State, has been named deputy director of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. She will assume her new role in January. Boddy has served as executive director of the Polk County Conservation Board since 2004. She is scheduled to be the moderator for the College of Engineering thematic year presentations on February 26 and April 16. (News release)


Women Impacting ISU calendar includes two from engineering

Women Impacting ISU

The women featured on the 2009 calendar.

Kristen Constant, associate professor of materials science and engineering, and Nicole Bell, senior in construction engineering, are among the 12 women selected for the 2009 Women Impacting ISU calendar. The Carrie Chapman Catt Center for Women and Politics unveiled the calendar and recognized the featured women at a reception on December 5. The students, faculty, and staff members were selected based on their achievements in administration, teaching, research, service, and various other campus activities. Commencement activities planned

The College of Engineering Master’s/PhD commencement reception will be Friday, December 19, 5:30–7 p.m., 220–240 Scheman Building. For reception and RSVP information, visit the Master’s/PhD Commencement Reception Web page. The Iowa State Graduate College commencement ceremony is at 8 p.m. in C. Y. Stephens.

The departments will each host a reception to honor undergraduates on Saturday, December 20. Each reception will begin with a continental breakfast at 9 a.m. followed by a student recognition program. Sites vary by departments.
