Leadership banquet held The Engineering Student Council sponsored the 9th annual Engineering Student Leadership Banquet on January 26. James Bernard, interim dean and Anson Marston Distinguished Professor, gave the keynote speech. One or more outstanding members from each of 23 engineering student groups was honored, and Clay Hopes, ME4, and Alex Lee, EE4, received the Dean’s Student Leadership Awards. Hopes, who has a minor in entrepreneurial studies, is from Treynor, Iowa. He has completed study abroad experiences in Australia, Germany, and Scotland and promotes studying abroad as a global ambassador in the Iowa State Study Abroad Center. In addition, Hopes is a project leader for Engineers Without Borders and a member of Iowa State’s Solar Decathlon Team. After graduation, he plans to earn a master’s degree in renewable energy management in Europe. Lee, who is from Malaysia, is treasurer of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) student branch and a member of the Eta Kappa Nu Mentor Program Committee and the Engineering Ambassador and Mentor Program. He is also an enhanced learning leader for ECpE’s electronics systems class. Lee has received the highest two percent engineering senior designation and has been recognized as the outstanding IEEE student branch member. He is presently applying for the concurrent BS/MS EE degree program at Iowa State.
Two College of Engineering assistant professors have been selected to receive National Science Foundation Career Awards. Congratulations to Dionysios Aliprantis, ECpE, for his project, “Sculpting Electric Machines for Unidirectional Motion,” and Qingze Zou, ME, for his project, “Rapid Broadband Nanoscale Viscoelasticity Measurement and Mapping of Soft Materials.” These highly competitive awards are for approximately $400,000 over a five-year duration.
