On Monday and Tuesday, April 20–21, 400 high school students from across Iowa will converge on Hilton Coliseum to participate in the 2009 IT-Olympics. This is an opportunity for students who have participated in IT-Clubs to showcase what they have learned over the last year as they have explored and experimented with information technology. This year’s venue topics are cybersecurity/cyberdefense, robotics, and game design. Volunteers are need for such things as judging events, helping run the events, working the registration tables, and serving pancakes on Tuesday morning. A team of four mechanical engineering graduate students is among three groups to be named regional finalists in the 2009 Pappajohn New Venture Business Plan Competition. Jared Brown, Cody Ellens, Randy Kasparbauer, and Anthony Pollard were selected for their plan, “Avello Bioenergy, Inc.” They recently formed Avello to commercialize technology developed at Iowa State, which is closely aligned to their research in bio-oil production. Robert Brown is their major professor. In addition, Corey Kliewer, a freshman in agricultural systems technology in the ABE department, was selected for his plan, “Hired Hands.” Each group received $100 for being named finalists and has the opportunity to compete for one of three $5,000 prizes at the Collegiate Entrepreneurs Iowa Conference March 6 at the University of Northern Iowa. Natalie Rolph, chief economist, Black & Veatch Enterprise Management Solutions, will present "Nonrenewable Energy Alternatives and Their Economics" on Thursday, February 26, from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Howe Hall Alliant Energy-Lee Liu Auditorium. This is the sixth event in the Energy Security and Sustainability thematic year series. Rolph, who established Black & Veatch’s regional electric market forecasting practice and is responsible for emission allowance modeling and allowance price forecasting, has more than 30 years of experience in the electric power industry. The College of Engineering is hosting Scholars’ Day on Saturday, February 28, for students who have been awarded university or college scholarships for next fall. More than 170 students and parents are signed up to attend. They will spend the day exploring engineering topics and careers through workshops and tours. Engineering faculty and staff have organized 21 workshop sessions for the day. Scholars’ Day is coordinated by Engineering Enrollment Services and Precollegiate Programs. ADVANCE workshop to discuss 2008 faculty satisfaction survey Sandy Gahn, ISU ADVANCE co-PI, and Jason Pontius, graduate research assistant, will discuss the results of the 2008 faculty satisfaction survey at an ADVANCE workshop on Monday, March 2, 2–3 p.m. in the Memorial Union Gallery. An overview of general findings will be presented followed by discussion of areas specific to ADVANCE goals such as department cultures and values, work/life policies, differences expressed by gender, and areas of concern for STEM faculty. Copies of the research report will be distributed, and attendees will have an opportunity to ask questions about the study.
The College of Engineering was well represented at Iowa State’s annual banquet to recognize faculty and staff who have been employed at Iowa State for 25, 35, or 45 years. This year’s honorees are: 25 years—Robert Abendroth (CCEE), James Bernard (ME/ADMIN), Robert Brown (ME/CBE/ABE), Jeffrey Eichorn (IMSE), Scott Schlorholtz (MSE), Martha Selby (MSE), and Terry Wipf (CCEE); 35 years—Linda Edson (CBE), Carol Gostele (ECM), and Thomas McDaniel (AerE); and 45 years—Karl Gschneidner (MSE).
