A team from the College of Engineering recently traveled to Mexico to participate in the annual Monterrey Tec (Instituto Tecnológico De Monterrey) International Programs Fair. Participants included Sriram Sundararajan, ME associate professor and director of graduate education; Nancy Knight, director of graduate enrollment management and team leader for the visit; Amy Carver, ME graduate program assistant; and Brenda Carrillo-Conde, CBE graduate student. The visit provided the opportunity to talk with prospective graduate students about Iowa State, to learn more about the programs and research at Monterrey Tec, and to meet with administrators to discuss ways to enhance exchange agreements and research collaborations. Funding for this trip was collaboratively provided by IMPACT funds from Engineering International Programs and Services, Engineering Graduate Programs, and the Departments of Mechanical Engineering and Chemical and Biological Engineering. (News release) Students present research at the Capitol Four College of Engineering students were among the more than 60 students from Iowa’s three Regent universities to present their research at the State Capitol building in Des Moines on March 9. The students displayed their research posters and visited with legislators and others about their projects. The event, which was coordinated by the University Honors Program, highlights the importance of research to the undergraduate learning experience. The engineering participants (listed here with their research topic and mentor) were Benjamin Blakely, ECpE (Internet-Scale Event and Attack Generation Environment, Doug Jacobson, ECpE); Jennifer Byer, MSE (Mixed Glass Former Effect in the Na2O+B2O3+P2O5 Glass System, Steve Martin, MSE); Charles Fisher, MSE (Statistical Analysis of Toolmark Striations, Scott Chumbley, MSE); and Rachel Scheurer, CCEE (Temperature and Water-Level Evidence for Flood Water Entering the Ames Aquifer, William Simpkins, geological and atmospheric sciences).
Has this winter got you stuck in a rut? Then join us for Learn@Lunch on Wednesday, March 11, from noon to 12:50 p.m. in Room 114 Marston Hall. To help you get those creative juices flowing again, ECM graphic designers Lisa Ailshie and Patrick Herteen are presenting "Creativity 101." This session will provide you with tips and tricks to help best get those wheels spinning again. We all know we need to think outside that proverbial box—but sometimes we forget what’s inside. Everyone has the power of imagination, and we guarantee* you’ll find out how to engineer yours. *guarantee may be limited and all restrictions apply; |
Send in evaluation forms on dean candidates Faculty and staff are asked to turn in their evaluations of candidates for the position of dean of the College of Engineering. Theodore Bergman (program director, Thermal Transport Processes Program, National Science Foundation; and professor of mechanical engineering, University of Connecticut) and Jonathan Wickert (Larry and Pam Pithan Professor of Mechanical Engineering and chair of mechanical engineering, Iowa State University) have concluded their visits. David Rosowsky (A.P. and Florence Wiley Chair Professor and department head, Zachry Department of Civil Engineering, Texas A&M University, College Station) will conclude his visit March 10, and Ishwar Puri (professor and department head, engineering science and mechanics, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg) will be on campus March 12–13. Evaluations are due by 5 p.m., March 18. (News release)
A recent $1.8 million estate gift from Kirby Gray (BSEE’45) established the Kirby Gray Chair in Engineering, the John Ryder Professorship in Engineering, and the Kirby Gray Scholarship. The endowed chair will be awarded to a leading faculty member in electrical, computer, or industrial engineering. The recipient will be recruited to Iowa State because of his or her success at creating knowledge or discoveries that will lead to new businesses and jobs in Iowa. The professorship honors John D. “Jack” Ryder (PhDEE’44), a former electrical engineering faculty member who was influential in Gray’s life. The professorship will be awarded to a faculty member in electrical, computer, or industrial engineering. The scholarship is an endowment to support merit scholarships for engineering students of any discipline. (News release)
