Jonathan Wickert, chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Larry and Pam Pithan Professor of Mechanical Engineering, has been appointed as dean of the College of Engineering effective July 1. (News release) Patent recipients and PPEA awardees to be honored College of Engineering faculty and staff who were awarded patents in 2008 will be recognized at the annual Marston Club Dinner on April 16. The recipients, collaborators, and patent titles are: Alan P. Constant (Ames Lab/IPRT and MSE), Bruce A. Cook, John E. Snyder, and Yun Tian, "AlMgB14 and Related Icosahedral Boride Semiconducting Materials for Neutron Sensing Applications"; H. Mark Hanna (ABE), Paul M. Boyd, "Apparatus and Method for Reducing Anhydrous Ammonia Application by Optimizing Distribution"; and Arun K. Somani (ECpE), Tao Wu, Raed Adhami, Liang Zhao, and Anil Sahai, "Real Time Music Recognition and Display System." Four alumni recipients of the Professional Progress in Engineering Award will also be honored. They are Chris Clover (BSAerE'91/MSAerE'92/MBA'94/PhDME'96), Sridhar Desikan (PhDChE’97), Dr. Craig Mahoney (BSIE'91), and Meiyu Shen (PhDChE’99). (News release)
An article by Kurt Hebert, CBE professor, and Jerrod Houser, PhDCBE'08, appears in the April 12 online edition of Nature Materials. In the article, "The role of viscous flow of oxide in the growth of self-ordered porous anodic alumina films," the authors report on their work examining what happens during the growth of the films. Five engineering students were among the 22 Iowa State students who received university scholarships/awards for their excellence in leadership and/or academic achievement at the Student Scholars and Leaders Recognition Ceremony held April 5. The recipients and the awards they received are Jesse Dodds (IMSE4), David W. and Ellen J. Raisbeck Leadership Award; Carl Kirpes (ME/IMSE2), Gib and Nancy Stanek Leadership Award; Matthew Martin (AerE4), David J. Henry All-University Leadership and Academic Excellence Award; Jessica Tobelmann (CBE3), W. Robert Parks and Ellen Sorge Parks Senior Scholarship; and Benjamin Zweber (IMSE3), Carnot H. Thomas and Lillian M. Thomas Award. Congratulations to all recipients on their achievements.
Sixteen engineering honors students are among the 66 Iowa State students who will present their research as part of the Third Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium on Tuesday, April 21, 8:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m. in the Memorial Union.
Want some tips on shooting video or purchasing a video camera? Then come to Learn@Lunch on Wednesday, April 22, from noon to 12:50 p.m. in Room 114 Marston Hall. ECM digital video specialist Travis Ballstadt will offer some quick tips and demonstrations of easy things everyone can do to make their videos better, whether it’s shooting a recruiting trip or a child’s tee-ball game. Travis will go over the plethora of new video and camera formats from SD to HD talking about the pros and cons of each, and he will explain the four basic manual controls on a video camera and how to use them to get great video by taking it out of autopilot. He will also show some examples of different lighting and how to achieve it. |
The Iowa State University Honors Student Board has selected Paul Castleberry, student services specialist in the College of Engineering, as recipient of the 2008–2009 W. Robert Parks Honors Commendation. Castleberry was recognized for his outstanding contributions to the honors program.
The Department of Mechanical Engineering dedicated the Kiewit Undergraduate Student Services Center on April 8. The center was constructed through a generous pledge of $200,000 from Kiewit Corporation and will help the department ensure academic and professional success for its undergraduate students. Veishea, Iowa State’s annual student-run festival, is taking place this week. Check out the Veishea schedule here. Among the highlights are BBQ lunches through Friday on central campus, 11 a.m.–2 p.m. The lunches are free if you have a Veishea button ($5) or $2 without a button. Veishea merchandise, including the buttons, may be purchased on central campus. The College of Engineering is a co-sponsor and will be showcased at Friday’s BBQ.
Donald Linder (BSEE’65) is one of five Iowa State alumni who will receive a Distinguished Alumni Award at the Distinguished Awards Ceremony on Friday, April 17, at 2:15 p.m. in the Memorial Union Sun Room. This award is the highest honor given to alumni by Iowa State University through the alumni association. Linder, a retired corporate vice president at Motorola, was the lead engineer of the Motorola group that built the first handheld wireless portable telephone in 1973. Linder will also present the ECpE Centennial Distinguished Alumni Seminar: "History of the Cell Phone" at 10 a.m. in 3041 ECpE Building Addition (adjacent to Coover Hall).
On April 20–21, 350 students from about 40 high schools will converge on Hilton Coliseum for Iowa State University’s IT-Olympics. Thirty-seven teams are entered in the cyber defense competition, making it the largest event of this kind for any division—high school, community college, or university. In addition, 23 robotics teams and 14 game design teams are registered to participate. The teams will compete from 1 to 8:00 p.m. on April 20 and 8 a.m.–6:00 p.m. on April 21. The events are free and open to the public. (News release) ECpE centennial gala is April 24 The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering is hosting a Centennial Gala and Awards Ceremony on Friday, April 24. The event includes a dinner and awards ceremony honoring faculty and students and a performance by comedian Don McMillan, a former electrical engineer and 1993 "Star Search" grand champion. The cost is $40 for the entire evening or $10 for the comedian only. Tickets can be purchased in 2215 Coover Hall (payment accepted by check only, made out to Iowa State University). The RSVP deadline for dinner is April 20.
