College hosts minority students
Leon Pickett, AerE graduate student, talks at Preview Day.
Twenty-one minority students participated in Preview Day on Friday, February 25. Coordinated by the Engineering Outreach and Recruitment Office, the daylong program is often the first campus visit for incoming minority students. The day gives students an in-depth look at campus life with the opportunity to attend class and meet and interact with current students as well as other new minority students. The students also participate in Scholars’ Day, which was held on Saturday.

Scholars’ Day draws 215 students!
The College of Engineering welcomed 215 students and their families—640 people total—at Scholars’ Day on Saturday, February 26. This was an increase of 80 students over last year. The event honors the brightest and most talented high school students including recipients of National Achievement, National Hispanic, National Merit, George Washington Carver, and Engineering Scholarships and Academic Recognition and Competitive Excellence Awards. Coordinated by the Engineering Outreach and Recruitment Office, activities included hands-on sessions to explore engineering topics as well as sessions to help them choose an engineering major and learn about career services. “More than 150 current students, faculty, and staff made the day a success by helping these incoming students discover what a great place Iowa State is for learning and studying,” reports Monica Bruning, director of outreach and recruitment.

F-100 Pratt and Whitney engine dedicated
Iowa ANG Senior Airman Jason Drish talks to students about the F–100 Pratt and Whitney engine.
A delegation from the Iowa Air National Guard (ANG), Dean Mark Kushner, Cory Tallman from Lockheed Martin, and faculty and students were all on hand for the dedication of the F-100 Pratt and Whitney engine recently donated to the Department of Aerospace Engineering. Tom Shih, AerE chair, thanked the Iowa ANG for helping to get the engine and delivering it to the department. “We’re so used to flying that we forget about the marvels of flying and don’t fully appreciate the enormous science and technology used for such a complicated machine," he said. "We are very grateful to be able to use it in the education of our students.”

Student leaders and faculty honored
Student leaders from 23 College of Engineering organizations were honored at the 5th Annual Student Leadership Banquet last week. Breeann Force, a senior in industrial engineering, and Sarah R. Walter, a junior in mechanical engineering, received the Dean’s Leadership Awards for their exemplary leadership activities both within the college and beyond. In addition to the student awards, 14 faculty and 4 staff members were recognized. The Engineering Student Council sponsors this annual event.
