Students Awarded NSF Graduate Fellowships
Four Iowa State University engineering students have been selected to receive prestigious National Science Foundation Graduate Fellowships. Selected on the basis of intellectual merit and potential impact on education and benefit to society, the recipients receive a $2,500 monthly stipend, and the university the student attends receives an annual $10,500 allowance for educational and research expenses.

Mark J. Thompson completed his MS in civil engineering at Iowa State in 2004 and is continuing as a PhD candidate. He came to Iowa State from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville where he earned his BS to study soil-structure interaction. Thompson researched micropiles and slope remediation for his MS thesis and will continue working with pile-stabilized slopes. He will also pursue research regarding lateral soil stress measurement with in-situ testing devices and lateral stress influences on foundation engineering design/performance. His major professor is David White, CCEE.

The other fellowship recipients are: Suzan Cox, a senior in chemical engineering, who will pursue her PhD in chemical engineering at the University of Minnesota; Ellen Klingbeil, a December 2004 graduate with a BS in aerospace engineering, who plans to earn an MS and PhD at Stanford University; and Kathleen Spees, a senior in mechanical engineering, who will enroll in the PhD+MS program at Carnegie Mellon University.

These students participated in a fall 2004 workshop planned to promote applying for NSF Fellowships. Coordinated by Nancy Knight, manager, Engineering Graduate Programs, the workshop featured current fellowship recipients Melinda Cerney, ME/HCI; Angela Green, ABE; and Cris Schwartz, ME; along with faculty members Judy Vance, ME; and Surya Mallapragada and Dennis Vigil, ChE.
