Jacobson Receives Regents Award
Doug JacobsonDoug Jacobson, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering, was one of six ISU faculty members to receive the 2004 Regents Award for Faculty Excellence. He was the only engineering faculty member honored this year.

Jacobson specializes in the area of computer security and serves as director of the ISU Information Assurance Center. He has received two R&D 100 Awards, both for development of security software packages sold by a company he co-founded in the ISU Research Park, Palisade Systems. Jacobson's current funded research is targeted at developing robust countermeasures for network-based security exploits and large-scale attack simulation environments.

“This is a well-deserved recognition of Doug’s important contributions to the field of information assurance,” said Interim Engineering Dean Charles E. Glatz. “Doug has an international reputation for exemplary and innovative work in this field; his work will make a real difference in protecting information networks. He is also a tremendous resource for our students.”

The Regents Award for Faculty Excellence is presented annually to outstanding faculty from the five Regents’ institutions. Recipients were honored September 14 at an event at the University of Iowa.

Who Are All of These People?
Thursday, September 23, is the annual Senior Visitation Day held in conjunction with Engineers Week. Over 200 seniors from throughout Iowa are signed up to attend the event. The prospective students, along with parents (total attendance is expected to be around 350), will tour the college, learn about our engineering programs, and meet with faculty and students. A committee of engineering students and the Office of Engineering Recruitment and Outreach coordinate Senior Visitation Day.

Learning Communities Recognized for Innovation
Two engineering learning communities received Outstanding Innovation Awards at the Sixth Annual Learning Communities Institute last spring. The Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering (ABE) learning community and the Electrical Engineering (EE) learning community were cited for contributions to learning communities at ISU.

ABE learning community members Dave Fisher and Tom Bowers, both English doctoral candidates, and ABE faculty members Tom Brumm and Steve Mickelson developed an electronic case-study exercise that simulates real-world experience to encourage critical thinking about discipline-based problems.

EE learning community members including Academic Adviser Roger Bentley Jr., Program Coordinator Vicky Thorland-Oster, and Adjunct Assistant Professor Mani Mina, all with ECpE, helped develop a six-step program to help students deal with change.

Engineering Exhibits Cyclone Spirit
Two College of Engineering offices received special recognition as part of the First Annual Cyclone Family Spirit Decorating Contest sponsored by the Student Activities Center Family Weekend Committee. Engineering Computing Support Services won the Innovative Award for their Family Spirit Tailgate Party and Engineering Communications and Marketing won the Theme Award for the Clone Zone. According to organizers, the event was wildly successful with 21 offices from throughout campus participating. The Office of Admissions in Alumni Hall won the grand prize. Watch out next year, as competition is sure to escalate.
