Challenging and Diverse Opportunities

Ten million transmitters built on a chip smaller than a dime; computers as powerful as today’s supercomputers that will sit in your pocket or purse; computers that operate with light rather than electronics; powerful microprocessors that help blind people see and deaf people hear—these are just a few of the technological advances computer engineers will bring to the 21st century. If you are interested in contributing to exciting innovations like these, consider pursuing a major in computer engineering.

The Computer Engineering Profession
Computer engineering is a relatively new field that is closely related to both electrical engineering and computer science. Computer engineers are typically involved in research, development, design, application, management, or marketing in computer and computer-based industries.

The computer engineering profession is incredibly diverse. As a computer engineer, you might do any of the following:
  • design the next generation of computers
  • work on networking computer systems for multiple users and ensuring network security
  • focus on how to share computing tasks among a large number of machines
  • develop complex integrated software/hardware systems
  • use Very Large Scale Integrated design to create high-speed integrated circuits and incorporating them in computers and other equipment
  • develop applications for virtual reality systems
