The Constitution of

Freshman Leaders in Engineering

 

Article I – Name

 

The name of this organization shall be the Freshman Leaders in Engineering of Iowa State University.

 

Article II – Purpose

 

The purpose of the Freshman Leaders in Engineering, hereafter referred to as FLiE, shall be:

A.)                To coordinate activities for the College of Engineering student body.

B.)                To provide leadership opportunities to the freshmen engineers.

C.)                To improve the leadership skills of the members.

 

Article III – Membership

 

A.)                Eligibility

1.)    To be a member, s/he must be a first year engineering freshman student who has just completed high school and is enrolled in his/her first semester at Iowa State University, excluding the President and Vice Presidents.

2.)    Maintain a 2.5 GPA for his/her first fall semester.

B.)                Becoming a Member

1.)    Applications for membership will be conducted by interview and/or written application, as the FLiE Executive Board deems appropriate.

2.)    Have an acceptable High School GPA

C.)                Membership

1.)    Members of FLiE shall:

                                                                           i.      Have regular attendance.

1.       Removal from FLiE will be determined and executed by the Executive Board.

2.       Two excused absences will count as an unexcused absence.

3.       Two unexcused absences will result in a meeting with executive board.  They will decide if the member will continue.

4.       Three absences will result in expulsion.

                                                                         ii.      Work under a committee(s) of their choice.

                                                                        iii.      Work to promote FLiE and the College of Engineering in a positive manner.

                                                                       iv.      Elect an Executive Board of their peers excluding the President position.

2.)    An Advisor from the College of Engineering will serve in an ex-office role.

 

Article IV – Executive Board and Duties of Officers

 

A.)                President

1.)    S/he will establish the meeting schedule, agenda, and preside over the meetings.

2.)    S/he will oversee the activities of each committee and the Executive Board.

3.)    S/he will stay in regular contact with the FLiE Advisor and the Engineering Student Council Executive Board.

4.)    At the end of the Fall Semester, the President will make sure all of the members are meeting the GPA requirements and take care of any discrepancies.

5.)    S/he will be a member of the Engineering Student Council cabinet.

6.)    S/he will act as a mentor to the newly elected Executive Board.

B.)                Vice President of Committees

1.)    S/he shall assist the president in FLiE operations.  In the event that the President is not available, the Vice President will assume all duties of the President.

2.)    S/he will be in charge of all committee chairs and responsible for establishing meetings between them.

C.)                Vice President of VEISHEA

1.)    S/he shall be responsible for assisting the VEISHEA Co-Chairs in the preparation of a float for the VEISHEA Parade.

D.)               SecretaryExecutive BoardEEE

1.)    S/he shall be responsible for recording and emailing meeting minutes and meeting reminders to members.

2.)    S/he shall be responsible for recording attendance and notify members when they have received an unexcused absence.

3.)    S/he shall work with the Executive Board to enforce the Attendance Policy.

E.)                Treasurer

1.)    S/he will oversee the acquisition of funds through Engineering Student Council, The College of Engineering, Sponsorship, or any other viable source.

2.)    S/he will take training online training and training instructed by the treasurer from the previous year.

F.)                Events Chair

1.)    S/he shall oversee the Events Committee, and will coordinate activities for the freshmen engineers.

2.)    This includes but is not limited to FLiE's participation in VEISHEA.

G.)               Communications Chair

1.)    S/he shall be responsible for maintaining and developing the FliE web page, SharePoint site, publications, and advertisements.

H.)               Outreach Chair

1.)    S/he shall be responsible for making FLiE visible to the College however deemed necessary by the Outreach Committee. S/he shall develop a relationship between FLiE and The College of Engineering and the community through philanthropic events.

I.)                 VEISHEA Co-Chairs

1.)    They shall be responsible for designing and building a float for the College of Engineering for the VEISHEA Parade.

J.)                 Responsibilities of the Executive Board

1.)    To initiate all activities of FLiE.

2.)    To maintain communication between committee members.

3.)    To have separate meetings with the Executive Board and Committees.

4.)    To ensure continuation of FLiE through mentoring the next generation.

5.)    To fill vacant membership positions due to membership termination.

K.)                Election and Terms of Members

1.)    President and Vice Presidents

                                                                           i.      The general body of FLiE will elect a President and Vice Presidents during the middle of the Spring Semester.

2.)    Executive Board

                                                                           i.      Terms beginning with the first semester of freshman year.  Duties converted to mentor new Executive Board at the end of spring semester.  Terms end at the end of the second fall semester.

                                                                         ii.      Will be elected by FLiE current members; peers.

3.)    Election

                                                                           i.      The Executive Board will review applications.  The Executive Board will have the final decision regarding the next terms members.

                                                                         ii.      Executive Board – Candidates will make themselves announced and present their reasoning to FLiE.  Then the general body will vote.  The elected members shall assume roles the meeting following the election.

                                                                        iii.      Members will be chosen for a term beginning fall semester and ending after the spring semester.

 

Article V – Amending the Constitution

 

To amend the constitution, there must be a two-thirds vote on the amendment in a meeting where the majority of FLiE members are present.
