IE 101 Orientation
Description: Introduce students to the industrial engineering profession, its scope, industrial engineering tools, and future trends.
Prerequisites: None
Books: None
Objectives:
- Students will understand the role of an industrial engineer in society.
- Students will be aware of career opportunities and professional requirements.
- Students will understand the role of professional industrial engineering organizations.
- Students will understand the engineering process in the context of industrial engineering.

Class/Laboratory Schedule:
The class once a week for 50 minutes. Students are randomly assigned to teams for classroom activities. Team activities include, career requirements description, process design, manufacturing operations, and web page development.
Contribution of Course to Meeting Professional Component:
Students are introduced to the overall process of engineering and the domains in which industrial engineering principles are applied. The role of professional organizations is presented for the development of the profession and support of individual career development.
Relationship of Course to Program Objectives:
(f, i) Students are introduced to the industrial engineering profession through real world examples of engineering problems. Students acquire an understanding of the requirements for the industrial engineering profession based on potential career paths. The opportunities for graduate education as well as professional development are discussed.
How Assessed:
At the end of each semester, course evaluations are administered by the department. In addition, students in APM administer an informal course evaluations about mid semester.
Actions to Improve the Course:
Based on the feedback from the students, and knowledge gained through industry interactions, the course is continually updated.
