COURSE GOALS

The use of images and audio data for covert channels, copyright protection, and ownership of data has seen an explosion of interest during the past 5-10 years.  This class focuses on the broad topic of digital information hiding for steganographic and watermarking techniques.  Steganography concentrates on hiding a message in an innocuous carrier to conceal the existence of the message.  Digital watermarking is concerned with issues related to copyright protection and intellectual property, and data watermarked for these purposes typically contain information about the data itself, such as the owner or contact information.  Cryptography, on the other hand, is the study of scrambling a message so that if and when it is intercepted, it cannot be understood.  Analyzing data in which information has been hidden is called steganalysis, and analysis techniques can be used to detect, extract, change or ultimately destroy the hidden information.  Results of steganalysis can also be used to change or improve embedding techniques.  This course gives an introduction to steganography and watermarking and some analysis techniques for various applications, including military, copyright protection, and intellectual property.
