1. Contact Engineering Career Services (ECS) to:

  • Make sure that you are registered on “ECSOn-line”
  • Keep your on-line resume up to date
  • Network with faculty, your advisor, ECS and Engineering International Programs & Serives (EIPS) regarding job possibilities
  • READ ALL emails from ECS regarding job possibilities.

2. Become your own personal recruiter:

  • Research global companies (i.e. via the web) to determine which ones offer opportunities that fit your career goals
  • Contact these companies via the internet to discuss your interest
  • Visit them at the Engineering fall Career Fair and spring Job Fair, and be sure to leave your resume with them
  • Network with faculty, your advisor, ECS and EIPS regarding job possibilities

3. When you have landed an international work assignment:

  • Meet with your advisor
  • Contact ECS to complete coop/intern/summer paperwork: ecs@iastate.edu
  • Notify Engineering International Programs & Services: eip@iastate.edu

4. Complete the following:

  • Apply for your passport
  • Apply for your visa
  • Make a realistic budget
  • Make housing arrangements, if necessary
  • Check with the Travel Nurse to determine which, if any, inoculations are required
  • Check your health insurance coverage
  • Apply for an International Student Identity Card (required) -
    • Provides supplementary emergency health insurance
    • Select discounts
    • Travelers’ Assistance service 24 hours/day
    • Available at the Study Abroad Center or Council Travel
  • Make an appointment with your Financial Aid officer
  • Make travel arrangements
  • Learn about where you are going
  • Participate in a “Pre-Departure Orientation” session provided by the Study Abroad Center
  • Prepare to be an ambassador for Iowa State and the United States

5. Stay in touch with the Engineering International Programs during your assignment

6. Volunteer for the TAPA Team (Talking About Programs Abroad)  with EIPS when you return to ISU

7. Have FUN!!!
