International Exchange Students: Admission Application Process

Application deadlines:
Fall Semester (Held mid-August through mid-December)
April 1
Spring semester (Held mid-January through mid-May)
October 1

Before applying to Iowa State University please meet with the Program Coordinator at your home university to complete their selection process.

Application process:
Applications must include:
  • Student's address: Must remain valid approximately 3 to 4 months from date of application. This is to make sure that the student actually receives their "Letter of Acceptance" in a timely manner. A common problem is that a student uses his/her current address and it is not the one that will be valid three months later.
  • Financial statement: Student must show financial support of $6,007/semester. This is not for tuition, but rather is a minimum amount required by ISU for room, board and other essentials.
  • Course preferences: Students need to talk with their home university academic Advisors/Program Coordinators to determine appropriate course selection. It is very important to list the preferred courses on the Application. Waiting to select courses after arrival at ISU may result in a shortage of courses available to the students.
  • TOEFL score (if applicable): If English is not your first language, please check with your Program Coordinator to see if this is required to study at ISU.  The College of Engineering requires a TOEFL score of at least, Computer:197 ; Paper-based: 530.
  • GPA (Grade Point Average): or equivalent.
  • Housing Contract: Signed and completed housing contract.  There is a link to the housing contract in the Incoming Exchange Student Application.
  • If the student is expecting to pursue a practical training (work) experience in addition to an academic exchange, the dates on application need to reflect the amount of time for both.
  • Transcripts must be submitted from your home institution.

To complete the ISU "Exchange Student Non-degree Application for Admission" form:

  1. Work with your home University's Exchange Program Coordinator to complete the entire application process and for assistance with questions when they arise. Download the Incoming Exchange Student Application

  2. Read "Frequently Asked Questions"

  3. Submit (by airmail) one original and 2 copies of all forms requested, including Transcripts and TOEFL scores, Housing Contract, Financial Statement etc., directly to the Study Abroad Center address as indicated on the form.

  4. Notify Exchange Program Coordinator and Director of International Programs & Services by email (eip@iastate.edu) that applications have been submitted.
  5. If you have questions that you home Exchange Program Coordinator cannot answer, feel free to contact your ISU Engineering Program Exchange Coordinator or the Engineering International Programs & Services office (eip@iastate.edu).

  6. Be sure to send completed application forms to the Study Abroad Center, Iowa State University, 3224 Memorial Union, Ames, IA 50011-1130 U.S.A. as indicated at the top of the application form.

After you have received acceptance to ISU:
Visa Application Process:
  • After a student has been accepted at ISU, she/he will receive a DS-2019 (for J-1 Visa) form from ISU to be used for Visa application.
  • The student submits copies of Admission's Acceptance Letter, Financial Statement and DS-2019 forms to U.S. Consulate in own country. (Can take up to 3 months!)

Housing Process:

  • Housing assignments are made on a first-come, first-serve basis from date of receipt of Application and sent to students after being accepted to ISU. Therefore, it is important that students apply as early as possible, but no later than the deadline.

Orientation:

  • Students are required to participate in a weeklong Orientation that begins the Saturday one week before classes start. Computer access, how to buy books, and assimilation to campus and the Ames Community are a sample of the topics covered in this Orientation.

Transportation:

  • Pease check back for information regarding transportation from the Des Moines Airport to Ames.
  • Notify College of Engineering, Exchange Program Coordinator, (eip@iastate.edu) of flight itinerary, airline name/s, flight numbers, dates of travel for entire trip from home departure to Des Moines, Iowa.
