Nate Korynta:
Technical University of Delft- Netherlands
A friend and I dragged suitcases, excitement, and anticipation through airports, onto unfamiliar trains, and down streets with names we could only try to pronounce (Papsouwselaan). In the months before departure, program difficulties had threatened to erase our opportunity to study Aerospace Engineering in the Netherlands. Just as I decided the situation was hopeless, the efforts of students, advisors, and universities fell into alignment. The journey began. In my travels, I learned to thrive in strange situations and understand other cultures. I experienced diverse approaches to education and business. I was forced to use my developing language skills to communicate with people of various nationalities. When faced with adversity, I learned to identify solutions, count my blessings, and even have some fun. Life’s open classroom taught me about myself , the world, and my God. My greatest joy did not come from beautiful landscapes or great structures. I was touched by the poor family washing their clothes in a small stream just outside of Rome. In broken Spanish, they attempted to help this privileged tourist. A small act of compassion towards a struggling hostel owner in Budapest was repaid ten times over when I missed my bus and he provided a place to sleep. Student friendships were formed as we shared meals, rowed down canals, and tried to do homework. I loved the soccer, snowballs, and water balloons with the local youth. I was blessed by the church families who lent me a guitar, took me skating, filled my stomach, and treated me as an honored guest. I cherish the memories of strangers who made me their friend. In the end, the struggles I faced do not compare with what I received. I returned with new inspiration and a greater appreciation for home. My experiences will help me achieve tomorrow.
