Incoming ELP Class of 2008 Scholar Biographies
Derek Buman
Derek is majoring in agricultural engineering and is from
Portsmouth,
Iowa. He enjoys hunting, fishing, camping, and sports in his spare time. Derek
decided to attend
Iowa
State because of it academic prestige. He is interested in intramurals, the
Greek community, and the Honors Program. After receiving his bachelor’s degree,
Derek plans on working a company that will allow him to design and test
agricultural equipment and eventually he may return to school and obtain his
master’s degree.
Michael Forrester
Michael is a chemical engineering major from
Sioux City, Iowa and enjoys
Taekwondo, reading, and writing. He is excited about exploring new activities
at ISU and hopes to get involved in research on pharmaceuticals. After the
completion of his undergraduate degree, Michael plans on staying in school and
getting his master’s degree. Within his major, Michael is excited about the
combination of chemistry and engineering in a unique way.
Debanjan Ghosh
Debanjan is a chemical engineering major from Omaha, Nebraska. He enjoys
reading, tennis, golf, playing video games, and volunteering. At ISU, Debanjan
is interested in intramural sports and academic clubs. His interest in
engineering stems from his desire to combat the energy crisis and improve the
standard of living throughout the world. Additionally, Debanjan looks forward
to using chemistry, physics, and math all at one time. He is most interested in
nuclear physics/chemistry and quantum mechanics and pursuing a master’s degree
Meredith Gibson
Meredith is from
Austin, Texas and is a chemical
engineering major. She enjoys doing a variety of artistic activities most
notably ceramics. At ISU, she is looking into pledging a sorority, studying
abroad, and volunteering. Meredith is interested in environmental policy
especially in the areas of groundwater and freshwater issues. After graduation
from ISU, Meredith looks to attend graduate school and work with environmental
policy either in the United States or in a developing country.
Deirdre Green
Deirdre is a mechanical engineering major from Downers Grove, Illinois. One day
she would like to be an imaginer for Disney and she is looking forward to the
design aspect of her major. In her spare time, she enjoys playing tennis,
talking on the phone, watching movies, and stargazing. At ISU, Deirdre is
planning on becoming involved in NSBE, WiSE, intramural tennis, and LEAD.
Derek Joseph
Derek is a mechanical engineering major from Lenexa, Kansas. He enjoys water
skiing, soccer, wrestling, and building robots. Derek is interested in studying
fluid power and motion in the mechanical systems of robots. At ISU, he is
looking at becoming involved in the Greek community, ISU Formula SAE, and the
ISU Robot Club. After completing his bachelor’s degree, Derek would like to
gain some job experience and then pursue a master’s degree.
Sheila Kelly
Sheila is from
Omaha,
Nebraska and is majoring in aerospace engineering. In her spare time she enjoys
Ultimate Frisbee, teaching swimming lessons, volunteering for the Paralyzed
Veterans of America Foundation, and reading. At ISU, Sheila hopes to continue
her work with the Special Olympics and take part in intramurals (especially
volleyball). Following the completion of her bachelor’s degree, Sheila would
like to enter the workforce.
Tyler Maiers
Tyler is from Cedar
Rapids, Iowa and is majoring in aerospace engineering. His interest in this
major stems from volunteering at the annual EAA AirVenture Airshow in Oshkosh,
WI for several years. In his spare time, Tyler enjoys reading classic
literature, bike riding, playing Frisbee, and golfing. After completing his
bachelor’s degree, Tyler sees himself going to graduate school or working for a
corporation.
Leah Merner
Leah is from
Cedar Falls,
Iowa and is majoring in mechanical engineering. She enjoys being outdoors and
participating in activities such as rock climbing, back packing, hiking, and
canoeing. Leah enjoys the details involved in engineering work and looks
forward to having a career that allows her to design for a purpose. After
receiving her bachelor’s degree, Leah would like to research or market designs
that can coexist with the environment and help preserve nature.
Mark Monat
Mark is a computer engineering major from
Independence,
Iowa. At Iowa
State, he plans on becoming involved in intramurals and researching the
technology side of engineering. After graduation, Mark hopes to find a job that
keeps him wanting to go to work each day. In his spare time, Mark enjoys
golfing, basketball, and hunting.
Erin Painter
Erin is a civil engineering major from
Monmouth,
Illinois. She enjoys swimming, painting, playing guitar, and volunteering.
Hoping to use her education to help others and make improvements to how people
live, Erin is looking to go on to get her master’s degree or work in the Peace
Corps following graduation. While at ISU, she is looking to get involved in a
variety of clubs and intramurals that will suit her interests.
Courtney Polk
Courtney is a mechanical engineering major from Omaha, Nebraska. She hopes to
become involved in choir, intramurals, and faith-based activities. Within her
major, Courtney is interested in how math, science, and problem solving skills
combine and is considering research in alternative energy sources or improving
existing energy sources. Following her bachelor’s degree, Courtney is thinking
about obtaining a master’s degree.
Tim Sprick
Tim is currently an undeclared engineering major from
Cedar Rapids, Iowa who enjoys a
variety of activities including writing, reading, running, volunteering, and
sports. He is interested in getting involved in intramurals, a fraternity, and
studying abroad while at ISU. Tim chose to enter engineering because of his
interest in math and science and the stability that the profession provides. He
is especially interested in world food issues and has completed a research
project in Egypt on Tilapia.
Jeremy
Vittetoe
Jeremy is from
Washington,
Iowa and is majoring in agricultural engineering. He enjoys the atmosphere at
ISU and hopes to become involved in a variety of activities such as intramural
sports, scale tractor club, and other agriculture-relates clubs. He is
interested in looking at how to make farms more productive in the face of rising
fuel, fertilizer, and other inputs costs. Jeremy is interested in researching
renewable energy and bio-fuels. Following his bachelor’s degree, Jeremy hopes
to work for a farm equipment manufacturer.
Bryan Woods
Bryan is from
Frankfort,
Illinois and is majoring in civil engineering. He enjoys spending time with his
friends, playing paintball, and occasionally fishing or golfing. At ISU, Bryan
plans on becoming involved in the Honors Program and the Civil Engineering
community. He is interested in the solving problems that can be addressed by
engineering and his major and he hopes to one day take the skills he has learned
and go overseas to improve the living conditions of under-developed countries.
