About the ELP

The mission of the Engineering Leadership Program is to create an environment for the leaders of tomorrow to realize their full potential and to recognize the responsibility to make the world a better place.  The ELP is integral to the College’s mission of graduating students who, “will be known and sought by the world’s elite institutions for their leadership skills, ethical behavior, technical and scientific expertise, and attention to society's needs” as well as ISU’s mission to create, share, and apply knowledge to make Iowa and the world a better place”.

Today, in a society that is heavily technology dependent, engineers continue to be noticeably absent from public leadership and policy making roles; only 6 of 535 members of Congress are engineers.  To provide solutions to many of the problems facing our increasingly technical global society there needs to be strong cooperation among academic, industrial, and governmental sectors.  Addressing such challenges must start today with the development of leaders in each of these sectors who can collaborate to find and implement innovative solutions.  The ELP at Iowa State University centers on this challenge.

To develop the leadership skills of its students, the ELP integrates academics with experiential learning.  The program is designed to build a community of leaders by facilitating dynamic partnerships and collaborations among students, faculty, alumni, employers, civic and community leaders.

The ELP is one component of a broader Engineering Leadership and Policy Initiative within the College of Engineering whose purpose is to encourage students, faculty, and staff to develop their leadership skills and become engaged in the formulation of public policy especially related to technology.

A generous gift from the Minnesota based 3M Corporation provided funding for the ELP.  The first twelve 3M Leadership Scholars were selected in spring 2006, and a cohort of seventeen first year students entered into the program in fall 2006, as the 3M Leadership Scholars of 2010.
