ELP Upper Scholar Learning Leadership Project Profiles The Leadership Learning
Project (LLP) is a continuing leadership experience
selected and designed by the student(s) to address an
issue or problem expressed by a group or community. The current LLPs are listed below. Each one has a project title, the scholar(s) involved, contact info for more information, and a brief description of the project.
Improving the Director of Grassroots Position Kristin Crawford kcrawford1126@gmail.com I have been involved in The 10,000 Hours Show of Central Iowa at ISU for two years now, and am currently the Director of Grassroots. The 10,000 Hours Show is a national, student-run organization that works to engage young people in their communities and celebrates each year with a free rock concert just for volunteers. As the Director of Grassroots, I am responsible for leading a grassroots team to get in touch with volunteers and set up presentations around campus and throughout the community. For my Leadership Learning Project, I want to create a “Director of Grassroots Binder” that includes email templates, step-by-step instructions, timelines, and all the information you need to know to be an awesome Grassroots Director here at ISU. This will be a great resource in the future, because with each year, the Director of Grassroots will add new tips and ideas to the binder and pass it on to the next director.
Freshwater Awareness, Testing, and Treatment Implementation Leigh Cumpston and Allison Machtemes lcumpst@iastate.edu allison9@iastate.edu 1.6 billion people do not have adequate drinking water and 2 billion need improved sanitation. According to the BBC News in December 1999, within 25 years, half of the world’s population will have difficulty obtaining enough freshwater for drinking and irrigation. The estimated global water inventory is approximately 1,357,860,000 cubic kilometers of which only 0.6% is usable towards human existence; freshwater. Urgent sustainable action is needed given these alarming statistics. The first concern on the local level is a water awareness program that can be easily implemented in classrooms and county environmental programs. Through this program children and adults with be educated on water conservation practices. Another gap within the freshwater usability is not a time effective way to test drinking water pathogens. After natural disasters and in developing countries, illnesses and deaths could easily be prevented through the use of a simple and cost effective way to test. Given this concern, we are looking to able current technology to create a time and cost effective test. To implement our ideas to address these concerns, we will be facilitating communication between a village in a developing country and ISU students to implement a freshwater treatment process to reduce contamination.
Great Relationships in Pairs Mentoring Program Website Development Samantha Eischeid flight51@iastate.edu My LLP involves working with the Great Relationships in Pairs (GRIP) Mentoring Program here in Ames. I am working with a member of the GRIP staff to create a new website for GRIP that would provide the community with information on the program, a chance to apply to become a mentor, and provide various mentor support areas. As a mentor myself, I feel like this project will help support the children of Ames and surrounding communities.
Carol Faulhaber carol.faulhaber@gmail.com Among the 2000 list of Millennium Development Goals, established by the United Nations, are environmental sustainability and establishing a global partnership for development.[i] To solve the problems facing the world, engineers must possess more than just a technical background. Understanding the social, economic, political, and environmental implications of engineering solutions would lead to more conscientious decision making. The addition of sustainability and appropriate technology course components to freshmen and sophomore level classes could increase awareness of sustainability issues among engineering students. If students are exposed to appropriate technology topics early in their education and multiple times throughout their college careers they would be more likely to apply sustainability concepts in the workplace as professional engineers. Andreas Frick gerandy@iastate.edu Very generally, my LLP focuses on displaying leadership within the Space Systems & Controls Lab. This task entails many different aspects, ranging from participating in engineering projects, managing Iowa State's bid in the 2008 Mars Society University Rover Challenge as lead systems engineer and providing leadership and organizing events pertaining to the lab as a whole. The first such event took place in mid-February in the Howe Hall Atrium in the form of an "open house" event. The goal of this event was to increase the exposure of the SSCL to students and faculty, as well as providing students with an opportunity to get involved in the SSCL. Most of my efforts are currently directed at managing Iowa
State University's effort to participate in the 2008 University Rover Challenge,
hosted by the Mars Society in the desert of Utah this summer. For this project,
I am working mainly on systems engineering and team management.
Improving Passing the Torch, a Leadership Program for Engineering Student Organizations Joe Goering jgoering@iastate.edu The event is called Passing the Torch, and will be held annually at the end of the Spring Semester, beginning in April 2008. At the conclusion of the LLP, the event will be organized and directed by Engineering Student Council. The main objective of the event will be to ease the transition of outgoing and incoming officers of student organizations in the College. Other objectives will include developing a stronger relationship between Engineering Student Council and student organizations, and teaching valuable leadership skills that students can apply to their careers. Students leaving the event will have a packet of information to help guide them as they learn their responsibilities as officers of a student organization. Passing the Torch will provide an opportunity to learn valuable leadership skills and other soft skills that would otherwise not be learned in a classroom. The event will help graduates of the Iowa State College of Engineering be successful in their career which will help build on the College’s strong reputation.
Health Care in the Developing World Mike Kalkhoff mike.kalkhoff@gmail.com My project centers around my two main interests: health care and the developing world. To begin this project I am researching what other actions are being taken to improve health care in the developing world. After concluding this research and talking with many people who are doing projects in this area, I plan to take on one of the projects here at Iowa State. Through this project I hope to gain an understanding of what can be done to improve health care in the developing world, improve heath care in the developing world and further in my leadership development.
ISU Skydivers Ryan Lefevre rlefevre@iastate.edu For my LLP I will be starting and running the ISU Skydivers student run club here at Iowa State. The general purpose of the club is to provide a place for skydivers to come together, and to educate people about skydiving in general. The initial goals for this club will be to set up the club and find the initial member base. The club will also be participating with a booth at events such as clubfest and VEISHEA. Future goals of the club will be things such as bringing in a larger rental plane to the local dropzone for the ISU Skydivers.
Rural Development T.J. Masker For my LLP, I want to work with the USDA on either a local, statewide, or national level on some projects to improve rural communities. We are in a position to revive these struggling communities with the recent boom of prices for agricultural commodities. Through partnerships I have made by being involved in a program called Agriculture Future of America I want to establish contacts to help me work on some rural development projects.
Raising Awareness of Career Opportunities in Residential Construction
This new NAHB student chapter will allow students the opportunity to network
with local companies in the residential construction industry, learn about a
new and upcoming technologies in the industry and meet other students with
the same career path and goals as themselves. This student organization is
currently in the development stages and with the assistance of other student
leaders, industry and faculty this will be a key to making students
successful in the residential industry after college.
I will also be working with students, faculty and industry to find topics
that our are important to being successful in this industry and finding a
way to integrate them with the current program through elective courses
being taught on the Iowa State campus. This will give students the
opportunity to focus on specialized areas in the construction industry and
will essentially make our students more marketable to a wider variety of
companies.
Environmental Justice Brad Meyer blmeyer@iastate.edu Environmental justice starts with examining the distribution of environmental risk. These risks can include hazardous waste facilities, landfills, nuclear power plants, airport noise, bus stops, anything that causes noise or physical pollution. The next part of environmental justice is to analyze the people who live in surrounding areas and are most exposed to these risks. The goal of environmental justice is to have such risks evenly distributed between rich and poor, white and colored, to people of all backgrounds. What we are trying to determine is a series of methods or procedures that transportation planners can use to distribute risks evenly when building new roads and planning public transportation. After studying these matters, we will eventually meet with the Iowa Department of Transportation to help develop policy to address these issues.
Expanding Minds of Tomorrow: Getting K-12 Students Interested in Engineering Elif Eda Miskioglu eemiskio@iastate.edu Minds of Tomorrow is a philanthropic organization started by
Engineer's Week 2006. It was founded to combat the ongoing problem that the
United States is lagging behind in the number of engineers graduating from
universities when compared with other nations such as India and China. The
belief is that if we
Improving Engineering Students’ Communication Skills Adam Rasmussen adamras@iastate.edu Many recent engineering graduates appear to lack a strong base of communication skills. The objective of my leadership learning project is to improve the written and verbal communication skills of engineering students. To improve the communication skills of engineering students, I will help charter a Toastmasters Club on campus, create a communication module for instructors to implement in core engineering classes and possibly in other classes, and aid the development of new communication-based engineering curriculum.
Starting a WiSE Scholarship Program Jessica Tobelmann and Heather Wilson jtobel@iastate.edu hw00688@iastate.edu Our proposal is to develop and implement a year-long WiSE (Women in Science and Engineering) Scholarship Program using its current scholarship recipients and become its co-directors. The members will to learn the leadership skills necessary to make them successful and contributing members of the Iowa State community and the world. Scholars will be required to participate in summer reading, attend one meeting per month, and participate in a service learning project. Much of the program’s development will be done throughout the Spring 2008 semester and our ideas will be implemented beginning Fall of 2008.
Making ISU Engineering Graduates Into What Employers Want Tom Turner tjturner@iastate.edu My LLP is discovering what skills and abilities that employers want and need of recent engineering graduates. In conjunction with that, I am looking at what skills and abilities Iowa State's engineers are lacking in and what we could do to improve our marketable skills. I would like to add some segments to Engineering 101, 102, and 202 to emphasize these sought after skills. Ultimately, if significant changes are needed, some curriculum modifications will be necessary. I am working with Larry Hanneman with Career Services to discover some of the abilities that employers are seeking.
Promoting Multilingualism and Cultural Awareness in the College of Engineering Radell Young rcyoung@iastate.edu My Proposal is to collaborate with the World Languages and Cultures department to promote multilingualism and cultural awareness first in the college of Engineering urging students to take more language courses and to participate in international activities. It is my hope to be able to also collaborate with Greg McGrath and Society of International Engineers to coordinate activities and informational meetings. I would eventually like a language requirement to be instituted in the college of Engineering and for students who go over and beyond this to be compensated with some sort of certificate. |
