Year 1: The Basics of Leadership The first year experience in the ELP is focused on building a leadership focused community of students. Components of the first year experience include:
Leadership Retreat Scholars participate in a team building retreat at the start of their participation in the ELP. The Leadership Retreat also begins to touch upon many topics connected to leadership skills development and leadership theory.
Leadership Seminar Scholars start to develop their individual leadership skills and styles while providing avenues for personal interest investigation. During the first year scholars are required to participate in a weekly hour-long Leadership Seminar that focuses on skills development. In addition to a curriculum led by the student director, guest lecturers are invited to present a seminar on leadership topics.
Peer Mentor Program Scholars develop a support network through their relationship with their peer mentor. Mentors are identified as established leaders on campus and are matched with scholars based on major, gender, and personality type. Scholars meet with their mentors bi-weekly and discuss topics such as leadership opportunities, academic assistance, and extracurricular activities.
Faculty Mentor Program Scholars begin to develop a professional network and are introduced to academic and research oriented professional paths. Scholars meet in small groups with a faculty mentor once a month and discuss topics that mirror what they learn in the Leadership Seminar. Scholars are also introduced to undergraduate research and get a chance to visit their mentors' research laboratories.
Dinner and Discussion Scholars and professionals discuss broad-based leadership related topics of interest over dinner. These events also serve as an interactive networking opportunity, which centers on the core philosophy adopted by the ELP.
Service Learning Projects Scholars have the opportunity to utilize and tune their leadership skills. During the first year of the program, the scholars plan, execute, manage, and reflect upon their own service learning project as a team.
Internship and Research Opportunities Scholars are encouraged to pursue unique engineering internships and research opportunities that allow them to apply their engineering and leadership skills to real-world issues.
