1. Course Name: Engl 104 First-Year Composition I
2. Catalog Description: Engl. 104. First-Year Composition. Cr. 3. Introduction to college-level writing strategies with emphasis on critical reading and thinking skills. Six to eight major writing assignments with readings from a variety of sources.
3. Prerequisites: None.
4. Textbook/Materials: Staff can choose from a short list of texts. A frequently used text is The Call to Write by John Trimbur (Addison Wesley Longman, 1999).
5. Course Learning Objectives:
- To develop strategies to revise writing.
- Adapt writing to specific purposes and readers.
- To use a variety of informational sources.
- To use a variety of organizational strategies.
- To avoid errors that distract or confuse the reader.
6. Topics Covered: The writing process, including revision; audience analysis; evidence and documentation; organization, expression, and correctness; writing summaries, position papers, and observation papers.
7. Class/Laboratory Schedule: Tuesday and Thursday 75 minutes each, or MWF 50 minutes each.
8. Professional Component: Engl 104 contributes 3 credits towards General Education.
