Students Engaged in Research

Providing an engineering education that will enable current and present students to succeed in the 21st century is a top priority of the College of Engineering. Faculty college-wide are engaging students in the processes of becoming critical thinkers who can analyze, hypothesize, and eventually develop new technologies to benefit all segments of society. By coaching both undergraduate and graduate students in research activities, faculty are sparking their curiosity and enthusiasm and motivating them to succeed.

Research is about asking appropriate questions and finding effective answers. Through their efforts, Iowa State research teams—which have always included students—have helped to make the world a more lively, colorful, and better place for all of us with ideas ranging from the first digital computer to glass fibers for laser surgery.

Following are a few of the dozens of stories about how engineering students are being engaged in research activities and how these activities are enriching their educational experience, sharpening their critical thinking skills, and providing opportunities to have a little fun.
