2000 Marston Medalist

The college awarded the 2000 Marston Medal to Wendell H. Nedderman, BSCCE’43, PhDCCE’51, during Homecoming in October. Nedderman is president emeritus and a professor of civil engineering at the University of Texas in Arlington, where he also served as dean of engineering. During Nedderman’s 20-year tenure as president of UTA (1972–1992), the undergraduate enrollment doubled and the graduate program increased almost five times to its current strength of 4,200 students. Nedderman initiated new programs in nursing, architecture, and education and expanded university facilities to create a total of 1.6 million gross square feet of new space. Considered a visionary and champion of higher education, he continues to serve university, community, and civic causes through teaching, advising, and volunteering.

Nedderman received his master’s degree in civil engineering from Texas A&M in 1949, but returned to Iowa State to get his doctorate.

Nedderman is the 62nd recipient of the Marston Medal, which honors an alumnus for outstanding achievements in engineering. Named for Anson Marston, Iowa State’s first engineering dean, it is the highest honor the college bestows.
