In Memoriam

Iowa State University and the College of Engineering lost a true friend on September 12, 2000, when Dr. Stanley R. Ring, 77, died of a heart attack. He was a tireless promoter of transportation engineering, safety, and continuing education. He was nationally known for his transportation engineering expertise.

A resident of Ames since 1948, Stan earned his degrees at Iowa State. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in civil and construction engineering in 1950 and 1967, respectively. His doctoral degree in transportation engineering was awarded in 1973. Stan served the college as a professor of civil and construction engineering from 1967 to 1988. He directed Iowa’s Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP) at Iowa State during its critical start-up years from 1983 to 1988. Then, as professor emeritus from 1988 until his death, he continued to serve an invaluable role in the LTAP program as transportation librarian and technical information resource for agencies throughout Iowa through the Center for Transportation Research and Education (CTRE).

Stan is survived by his wife, Betty, two daughters, and three grandchildren. A memorial will be established in his name to create scholarships for civil engineering students.
