Honored for service

The College of Engineering recently recognized six faculty and staff members for their superior accomplishments and service to Iowa State.

Top research award to Wipf
Terry J. Wipf, CCE professor, was the recipient of the 2000 Boylan Eminent Faculty Award for creativity and productivity in research. Internationally recognized for his work in bridge engineering, Wipf was cited for his unique ability to put innovative research ideas into practice. His research results have been incorporated into bridge design criteria and procedures, especially for timber bridges and bridge strengthening. His distinguished professional career includes authoring over 100 papers and reports, participating in numerous technical presentations, and contributing to two bridge engineering handbook/design manuals. He has served as the principle investigator or co-investigator on research projects worth more than $4 million.

Outstanding Achievement Awards
James D. McCalley, ECpE associate professor, was presented with the Young Engineering Faculty Research Award for significant contributions to the area of risk-based dynamic security analysis within power systems. His pioneering research has provided a quantitative method for monitoring the safety levels of high voltage transmission systems in power generation. Along with several publications and proceedings, McCalley has generated $3 million in research funding to build a strong graduate education program in the department.

Alan M. Russell, MSE associate professor, was honored with the Superior Engineering Teacher Award. In a teaching career that spans 23 years, Russell has worked with more than 2,000 students, who consistently gave him the highest student evaluations in the MSE department.

The Superior Engineering Advisor Award was presented to Kristen P. Constant, MSE associate professor, for her excellent work advising MSE students. Constant served as a member of the College of Engineering Advising Committee and in 1997 helped restructure the MSE advising system using student questionnaires she had designed.

CCE Assistant Professor Brian J. Coree received the Superior Engineering Extension Award. Coree’s professional expertise in highway paving and asphalt technology has earned him recognition as a respected practitioner and technologist within city and county agencies, industry, and the consulting community. Among his many achievements, Coree was cited for boosting the asphalt research program at Iowa State, a marked effort that led to the Asphalt Pavement Association’s decision to contribute more than $100,000 for an asphalt laboratory.

Outstanding staff honored
Janet W. Putnam was the recipient of the Dean’s Staff Excellence Award, an award presented for the first time to recognize a staff member who has shown dedication and superior service to the college, university, and the community. Putnam, who is an associate classification officer with the undergraduate program, was praised for her tireless efforts in presenting a positive image of the college and its constituencies. Putnam’s numerous tasks include coordinating schedules and reports, ABET institutional documents, the college catalog, and assisting students with academic difficulties. Putnam was recognized for her initiative in creating The Engineering Ambassador Mentor (TEAM) program, a vibrant student organization that supports undergraduate recruiting.

Outstanding student leaders
Two student leaders who last spring received the 2000 Dean’s Leadership Award were also recognized. Ben Golding, BSConE’01, and Kim Tholen, BSME’00, were honored for their leadership activities at Iowa State and in the community at large.
