They come from small towns, large cities, and foreign countries thousands of miles from the Midwest. Some are first-generation college students; others come from a long line of engineers. They want to explore space, save lives, design new materials, and start their own businesses. Some are already active in extra curricular activities; others are taking their time to learn the ropes.

They are the members of the Class of 2006, nearly 1,400 strong and eager to join the ranks of Iowa State’s remarkable engineers.

This issue introduces ten freshman students, who we will follow over the next four years as they work towards their undergraduate engineering degrees. The group includes a student who finished a semester of college before he graduated from high school, a member of an Iowa State dance ensemble, and a budding entrepreneur. Look for updates on all ten in subsequent fall issues of Marston Muses.

One WiSE Move Begets Another: Kathryn Bergman, MSE

Neither of Kathryn Bergman’s parents went to college. But they knew what they wanted for their daughter and instilled in her a desire to succeed that will take her through Iowa State and beyond—even, perhaps, to the stars.

“I took all the hard classes,” the MSE freshman notes, “chemistry and math.” Then, the summer after her junior year in high school, she did an internship with MSE Professor Larry Genalo under the auspices of Iowa State’s Women in Science and Engineering (WiSE) program.

That sealed the deal: Bergman would major in materials science and engineering. Still, despite the internship, the Boone, Iowa, native didn’t know what to expect when she got here. So to smooth her transition, she moved onto a WiSE floor in the residence halls. “You’re totally immersed in everything,” she says. “Everyone around me is focused on academics.”

Bergman says she’d like one day to conduct research on materials for the space program. Maybe that’s not surprising, since she thinks the support she gets at Iowa State is out of this world.

“I didn’t know everybody was going to be so nice,” she enthuses. “Supplemental instruction, tutors—it’s all at your fingertips. They really want you to succeed here!”
